Savage Barrels
« on: June 12, 2004, 09:51:22 AM »
Right now, I have a Savage Model 11 with a sporter weight barrel, but I really want a heavy barrel varminter.  As I see it, I can do one of two things - buy another gun, which I would need to sell my current gun to do, or modify the one I have got.  I am very happy with the groups my barrel shoots, but I want something that doesn't heat up so fast.  I was thinking of getting a heavy barrel, and then getting one of the Bell and Carlson synthetic stocks.  Does anyone know if Savage makes barrels that I can buy individually, and then put on my gun myself?  If so, how much would it cost?  Another option is to sell my Savage and get an Encore, but that would leave me without a gun until I could come up with the funds.  Any information is appreciated.

My suggestion would be to just get another gun.  Why?  Well, if you are talking about buying another barrel, then buying another stock, and then consider the labor involved (if you have a professional do it right - including glass bedding, pillar bedding, free floating, etc.) then the cost will almost force you to just buy another gun.

As for groups, don't worry.  All Savages, for whatever reason, are shooters.

Also, if you get a heavier barrel, I also suggest getting it fluted, so that the heat can dissipate quicker.

sounds like you need to call Fred at 419-695-3179  This is Sharp Shooters Supply and they deal with all kinds of Savage stuff. They seem to do a good job.  Or   www.savageshooters.com

I second Yankee's advice. Give Fred a call and do whatever he recommends.

I think I remember seeing Shilen barrels for Savage rifles in a Brownell's catalog.  Good luck with your decision.  www.brownells.com
