New barrel options?
« on: March 30, 2004, 01:59:10 AM »
Hi all.

I'm looking into getting a custom rifle built for me. The smith says for me to put a list together and we'll talk price from there.  He likes Sako Actions and shillen barrels. Personally, I like mauser and springfield actions and the barrel I have no preference. I do have rifles with Douglas, Hart, Shaw and Shneider barrels on them.

I'm thinking of having either a springfield acton or one of the new mauser actions done up in the classic english/german lines from the turn of the 1900's ( Smoker* from AR has inspired me)

This will be a 35 something and purley for hunting.

What flavor of barrels do you guys prefer.

thanks

Sshilen barrels are really goo but quite expensive.  Douglas has also been good for me but then I build mostly hunting weapons..  and prefer to spend any excess funds of pretty wood!

I'm new to this custom rifle idea but was going to ask this question about barrels which i don't know too much about.  But do we have a choice in what steels are used in custopm barrels??  Can we buy chrome moly or swedish steel barrels?  Or should I ask who makes the best or a top quality rifle barrel?                                          BigBill

Asking which is the best barrel is a lot like what is the best truck?  Most barrel makers produce a product that will work acceptably, or they'd soon be out of business.  There are differences in quality control and manufacturing technoledgy used but by and large a medium priced barrel will produce all the accuracy you'll likely ever need for hunting.  I like Douglas and have had excellant results with them..  PacNor is also a higkly thought of company but I've no experience with them.  Steel for barrels is basically one of 2 forms, chromoly or stainless.  Makers have some very definite ideas about which is the best stainless or the best chromoly alloy but the choice is really yours..  Stainless is a bit more affected by cold than is chromoly and some makers require more wall thickness of a stainless barrel than a chromoly.  Though the real difference is minbor.  I prefer chromoly.

gunnut69  Thanks I'm kind of new to researching this.  Your right the Chrome moly steel barrel is made out of 4140 steel its very good quality steel.  Most of the stainless barrels is made out of 416 stainless.  Now I don't understand the choice of twists we have in picking a barrel.  What produces the best accuracy more twists or less twists?  Is there a rule of thumb like faster velocity smaller bullets less twists and slower larger caliber bullets more twist?  Is there something to go by in choosing the rate of twist?                                                    BigBill

On another website they said the rifle manufacturers orginal twists are ok.
I also found a twist rate calculator; http://tanksrifleshop.com/twistcalc.htm

Go with whatever barrel the smith likes. I have nothing but Douglas barrels, but that is what my smith likes. They are fine.

Here my 35 something (35 Whelen to be exact).

Steelhead.

:-) Pretty rifle; I have 2 rifles in manlicher configuration. One is a 1903ms  in 6.5x54 and the other is a ruger in 06.

Thats what I'm looking for kinda. I'd like a lightweight barrel about 22", and a really slimmed down english/german stock. I'd like to keep the rifle about 8lbs with scope.

I'll probably go with douglas. Had good luck with them befoore and I don't have to get a second mortgage.
