Tikka action same as the Sako?
« on: April 18, 2004, 03:10:49 AM »
I've been told this before but now I can't find any facts.  I don't own either, but really like the 60 degree lift on the brownings and sako's.  Does the tikka have it or not, and how does the rest of the action compare to a sako.  I've noticed the plastic clips on the Tikkka which really bothered me originally.

Thanks,

I believe the T3 has a 70 degree bolt throw, and it is silky smooth!

I'm not a Tikka owner, but I believe I know what the basic differences are. The Sako 75 has a 3 lug bolt and standing ejector. Bolt lift is 70 degrees. The Tikka has a 2 lug bolt and plunger ejector. I'm not sure what the bolt lift is, but I think it's less than 90 degrees. It may be 70 degrees like the Sako. Also, I think the Tikka T3 has a bolt handle that detaches from the main bolt body. The Sako, on the other hand, has a one piece bolt which, personally, is my preference.

I own 2 Sakos and the actions are really nice. I have handled a Tikka Whitetail Hunter and the bolt operation on that rifle was as slick as any I've ever handled. I have not handled the newer Tikka T3.

I own a Tikka T3 300WSM and love it.  I borrowed mine to a friend and he has purchased one also after using mine.  I also have a 22-250 T3 on order.  The action is the smoothest you will find.

For a factory, out-of-the-box action, the Tikka truly has the smoothest action - actually, it is much smoother than the Sako (not necessarily better than the Sako, but smoother - no doubt.)

However, if you take, say, a winchester or remington bolt action, and have it lapped, then it will be as smooth as glass.  I had my Winchester M70 Classic Stainless in .375H&H's action lapped and I just can't believe it!!   When you work the action, it requires less effort, and when you pull the bolt, it is super quiet.  As such, the smoothest action I own is the that worked-on Winchester, but that's because I spent (if I remember correctly) something like $100 for the gunsmith's charges - maybe more.
