Author Topic: Rem. BDL or Mountain Rifle? (Read 1085 times)

Hi All, I would like to get a rifle in 7mm-08. I have found a new 700 BDL stainless steel with detachable magazine and synthetic stock, and a new 700 mountain rifle laminated stock and stainless steel. They both cost nearly the same. I can't decide what to get. Any suggestions???

I would get the mountain rifle because i like the laminated/stainless look. Handle each rifle and whichever one feels best when your holding it buy that one. If you still can't decide have someone else choose for you.

Love my Mtn. Rifles (both .30-06 and 7-08). Hate the cold noisy plastic stocks and ain't gonna have a detachable magazine on no rifle of mine. I vote for the LSS Mtn. Rifle.

The 7mm-08 makes is an excellent choice in a mountain rifle. If you plan to hunt extensively in the rain, get the synthetic-stocked BDL. Otherwise my vote goes for the laminated mountain rifle.

I love my Mountain Rifle, accurate, light, easy to use in a tree stand and easy to carry and still hunt. 30-06, kicks a little more than a heavier gun but it is my favorite rifle. I have a beautiful walnut stock with a blued barrel. Just my choice think it looks great. If I was to replace it I would consider the 7mm-08. I am a older hunter and I just like how the gun shoots and looks and it is less to swing and carry. My leupold 3-9 matte finish touches it off just right. I think guns can be very personal as to what you like in feel and looks. Nobody is wrong for their choice it just comes down to what you want to hunt with and what looks good to you in the gun cabinet.

I own the exact gun you are looking to get - a 7mm-08 BDL SS DM (Stainless Synthetic, Detachable Magazine).

I also hate Remchester plastic junk stocks. On many of my rifles, I put on aftermarket McMillan or HS Precision stocks. The problem with the BDL SS DM is that, even if I pay a bunch of money to get a good stock, I have to pay an additional bunch of money to get a BDL hinged floorplate conversion. That notwithstanding, the gun is very accurate.

The differences between the BDL SS and the Mountain LSS is that the BDL SS has a 24" barrel (regular contour), while the LSS has a 22" slimmer countour.

If I had to do it all over again, I would get the Mountain LSS.

Remington is introducing a new rifle in about 4 weeks, the 700 CDL. It will come in about 5 or 6 calibers the first year, of which 7mm-08 is one of them. According to their 800 number, they are already into production and should be available from the distributors by mid April.

If you have your mind set on a Remington, maybe you should ckeck out the new CDL as a possibility also. It comes with a 22" or 24" barrel depending on caliber, an old fashioned wood stock and it has a few new ideas.

Just something else to rattle and make noise or to fall out and to have to keep up with. Down here in the south the road hunters love them. They can keep the gun loaded in the vehicle in case they get a shot at a deer from their vehicle riding down the road but if they see a game warden it is quick to pull out and call the gun unloaded. I have no use for them and would rather use a single shot than anything with a detachable mag.

I understand the 700 CDL's will be 24" for standard calibers and 26 for magnums. I have a 7RM ordered but it won't be filled for at least 6 weeks according to my distributor. I like the way they look as well. Selling my Ruger No.1 in 7RM too finicky for me....OK GB Tell me I told ya so....

I happen to like the removable mag. I have used one over 40 years and in a Rem. 760 and also in a bolt .270. No rattles. Only failure was gum rapper one time. Lesson learned.

I consider them a good safety item. When you have a removable mag. All you do is drop it in your hand when time comes to unload. You are not working a bunch of rounds with your action. Check the barrel to make sure it is empty and you are safe & sound. I assure you that in a long career I have encountered a lot of loaded guns in vehicles. Then there are always the guys jacking rounds all over the place with other mags. Rounds in the dirt, in the mud, and in the snow.

700 MOUNTAIN RIFLE NO QUESTION. I have owned one several years in 30-06. Great feel, fit and finish light and easy to carry all day.I myself like the detachable mag. The ease of quick loading/unloading is great while sitting in a tree stand. Good luck with whatever choice you make.

I’ve been reading the forum some and the reviews some for a while and have enjoyed the honest responses. I sold an old 700 BDL in ‘97 and bought a new 700 BDL SS DM. The only thing I’m not as happy with is the plastic.

Hi All, Thanks for all of the information. This was kind of a loaded question. I already have one 7mm-08 LSS mountain rifle in the house and it is a great gun, but I thought that maybe I was missing something that the BDL offered.

I do have one major problem with the mountain rifle, it is my 13 yr. old daughter's, and she will rarely let me shoot it :grin: I got it for her last year and she has harvested two very nice bucks, with two shots. We are only allowed one buck per year or she would have many more. She just loves it.

Any of you that are worried about recoil etc. of the 7mm-08 don't be. My daughter is 5' tall and under 100 lbs. She handles it with no problem. She is a very good shot if she has time :grin:

DoC - I did the same thing! Got one in .300RUM and the as soon as I got it home I replaced it with a McMillan stock! :-D :-D Best thing I ever did! Don't like the looks of the laminated stocks... CEJ

I must admit that I might be a little behind the curve at times. But a few years ago I picked up a Mountain Rifle take-off stock from a custom gunsmith. I installed it on a 700 ADL. I like the profile, and the fit off the shelve. If Remington has maintain the same pattern I consider it a winner. A real shooter.

From the way I see it, the differences between the CDL and BDL are as 1) the CDL has a 24" barrel for standard calibers and 26" for magnum - where as the BDL has 22" and 24" respectively (except for Ultra mags), 2) the CDL has a straight comb, where as the BDL has somewhat of a monte carlo stock, and 3) the CDL doesn't come with open sights - whereas the BDL has open sights.

Other than that, it's essentially the same.

The CDL has a newfangled Recoil Pad and returns to the old style wooden stock with the darker schnable. (spelling?) And from what I read, it does come with a Monte Carlo stock or a 'cheek piece' and a jeweled bolt.

I've had two, a 7-08 & 308. Both beautiful and easy to use and carry. I guess bolt actions have spoiled me and I never could work up a load that worked in the BDL's. My 30-30 shot as good and I'm not afraid to get it scratched. Thats a big problem with beautiful rifles, you spend a lot of time trying to take care of them.
