Remington Laminate thumbhole model 7
« on: April 25, 2004, 06:30:53 AM »
I saw a really nice red colored laminated thumbhole Remington bolt action rifle in .300 short mag at Gander Mt. recently. I guess it was a 2003 special run ? Anyone have any comments or experiences with this rifle?
I sure liked the way it felt 8)  I'd love one in .308!

My son has the model 7 in 243, stainless with a laminated stock. Let me tell you it is one of the best looking guns out there and shoots very good to boot. It seems like Remington only made them the one year and started to make the ss with the black synthetic. Matter of fact I was looking for the same gun in 7mm-08 but couldn't find it.

After having given them a try a couple of times I can tell you I HATE and DISPISE thumbhole stocks on hunting guns. You couldn't chase me fast enough to give me another. I'd think long and hard before buying a thumbhole stock for use on a hunting gun.

What didn't you like about em GB?   I shot a custom Fajen Rem Mod 7 .243 at the range and it was a tackdriver.

Well I like Thumbhole stocks, I have two right now and working on a third.
#1 with a Thumbhole is a Rem 26" barreld 25-06 with a bell and carlson
(kinda of a crapy stock, black fiberglass/kevlar light but some what weak at the forearm, but works well )

#2 300WBY vanguard with a boyds ross Thumbhole, good stock, a little on the fat side on the forend but stout.
#3 will be a 338-06 on a boyds Ross Thumbhole..work in progress.

There are two main reasons I like thumbhole stocks:
1. it is easier to control the rifle while crawling on your belly sneaking up on a critter.
2. Felt recoil is tamed a lot because the web of your hand as well as your arm helps control recoil. This is a very good thing for people who(like my wife who will get the 338-06) to shot accurately from any posisition and to dampen recoil.

Take this test, take a heavey kicking gun and lay on your belley and shoot it, take a same weight same caliber gun with a Thumbhole stock lay on your belly and drop the hammer, you will feel the difference and your
collarbone will thank you very much.
