My version of the 357 Max
« on: May 24, 2010, 01:42:18 PM »
As some of you may know, I purchased a 357 max from canon a while back.  Well I shot it and it had a major forend problem.  It would "pattern" at 30 yards with the forend on, but with it off, it would shoot one hole with winchester white box 38's.  So I did some sanding and went back to shooting.  Well it helped but was not as good as with it off.  To fix this, I bedded the forearm with blue RTV silicone and added some paint.  Everyone knows a good looking rifle shoots better.

Before:

It had some scuff marks on the stock and it wasn't any thing special.

After:

I used Rustoleum Brown Textured stone paint over grey primer.  I did some reshaping on the forearm as well so it matches the size of the gun.

The texture really sticks out and helps the gun "stick" to your hands.

I wasn't real sure about the color, but it is really growing on me.  I am going to shoot it this weekend and hopefully produce something better out of it.  Now if I could only find some AA 1680  :-\

Thanks,
Matt

I used the same paint on the metal part of a 20 Ga cbc 151 single.  It was headed to garbage by the guy who gave it to me.  I got the rust out of the metal, painted the exterior metal, cut barrel to 18.5", shortened stock and refinished to 34" overall.  Add in a sling I braided from leftover latigo and I have a jeep gun for offroad. Great can of spray paint but it clogs easy.

Hey that looks pretty sharp. It kind of has the appearance of one of the Hogue overmolded stocks you see for the Ruger 10-22's.

Looks good Matt, I did the same thing with 3 guns and they realy come out good and its pretty easy to do. I tryed a different coller on each one to see which one I liked the best, the max in the light gery w/black flecks,45 lc in the brown like yours and a 270 savage syn. stock in od green w/ black flecks, for me the od green I like the best. I did mine about a year ago and it seems to be holding up pretty good. Good job.

Thanks for all the comments guys.  I wasn't expecting quite this many.  The scope is a 2.5 power simmons 8 Point.  I'm happy with it so far, I may put a 4 power on it later for just a bit more range.

When I went to get the paint I was set on Black with Black flecks but decided that it would look like synthetic and I wanted something unique.  They only had the gray, lighter brown and this brown.  I would have definitely gone with the OD Green had they had it.  That would make a slick looking rifle.

I went to Cabelas over the weekend and tried to find some AA1680 with no luck.  I did however find some 180gr XTP's to try out in it.  I plan on hunting with them this fall out of my 357 S&W as well so it worked out.

The finish on this gun is thin to say the least.  Has anyone tried Duracoat on their stuff?  I have a bottle for other reasons and thought about coating this gun eventually.  What do you do about the breach face and the barrel face?  I would think it would have head space issues or not close up, let alone not hold up to the pressure.

Thanks again for all of the comments!  It makes a guy feel good when other people like his work.

Thanks,
Matt

Others here know a lot more than me but since this thread is about to slide off the page: Keep the coatings or paint off the barrel and breach face. In those places the finish won't stay if the gun needs tightening up and if the gun is tight already it can cause the gun to not lock up. I have read here not to paint those surfaces. eddiegjr (Your gun looks good.)

Matt,
I have a extra can of AA 1680, if you feel like driving down to Belleville, you can take it off my hands. ;)  I have two rifles and a shotgun that are duracoted. I didn't do the work, but hear it is simple enough.

P.S. Bring the rifle, we can shoot next to my house!

Thanks, Dinny
