BEP's - Tonight or Tomorrow?
« on: December 31, 2022, 11:08:34 AM »
Been eating black eyed peas
for years and years, not only
for the 1st
My family always had BEP's
new years eve, and new years
day
Today the question was posed
by the youngsters. Do you partake
on nye, or ny day ?
I've never thought about any controversy
over the subject

There's probably as many that never
eat BEP's at all
What does everybody else here do?
18 MINUTES.  . . . . . .

Never had a special meal on NYE or NYD, but up here it is most often Norther White Beans cooked with smoked Ham, if we eat beans.
There are some dishes with Lima Beans but have not had one for fifty years and do not miss it.

Made pork tenderloin with a barbecue rub and basted with pan drippings. When almost done, basted  with brown sugar honey and pan drippings over white rice.

Our family always made Bagna Cauda. pronounced Bun-u-cada.   Its a very flavorable dish, mostly was made as an appetizer. It consists of oil, butter thinly sliced garlic, and anchovies, that basically get dissolved while cooking. Its eaten hot by dipping cabbage wedges in it and eating with good bread.  People generally turn their noses up when they hear anchovies, but if I ask people whats in it after they taste it, no one ever says anchovies.

Around here, I guess most people know that black eyed peas exist, but they rarely use them.  Nothing against BEP,
it is just not part of our tradition.
Tradition can change, but that is a slow process...i think people still look at BEP as beans..at least by appearance.
Comical...from my years in the south it is clear to me what we call "peas" here, are called "English peas" in the south.

  Colorful colloquialism ....for sure..

I eat anchovies along with sardines and crackers. And a bit of Louisiana hot sauce.

I make seafood pastas with a few “anchovies please”  it’s just a part of the whole that most don’t even know is there. Especially those that “eat to live not live to eat”

New Year’s Day, but I’m not sure it matters. I love ‘em, with cornbread, just about any time.

Same here. They went well this evening with a big ole ribeye, a salad, and a big glass of sweet tea.

I don't like BEP's, but a healthy dose of pickle relish on top of them makes them edible.  Dill or sweet relish works, doesn't matter which.

I am going to have to go to the store and get some Black Eyed Peas and see how they are different from other beans.
Now I did last week take a can of  this:

and mix it with a can of this:

Which came out quite tasty; the other half who is fussy, put it on top of Cheesy Potatoes and thought it was very good.

You'll probably want to add something because
by themselves, BEP's can be bland
I'll add some Bolner's Fiesta brand pinto bean
seasoning, or a small bit of liquid smoke, or
some of the ham flavor packets, or all
of the above
A hambone is usually good
