PPB's in the 30 Carbine
« on: February 22, 2004, 03:35:31 PM »
Hello,
It's starting to warm up around here,an I'm thinking about going to the range.
My new project is paper patched bullets in the 30 Carbine. Has anyone here tried doing it?
Do any of you pistol shooters use PPB's?
Can you fill the case with powder to the base of a PPB,without a wax wad on the base?
Can you slightly compress H110 powder?
I have 3 bullets,all similar,but of different weights;115.5,118.5,and 120.5 grains.
Thanks,
Frank

I am paper patching for a .357 Mag.  It's working well - even with crimping.  I would think a .30 carbine would be fine too since you don't need to roll crimp.

The bullet I use is Lee's version of a LBT which has a crimp groove as well as the lube groove.  This may actually mitigate the damage a crimp would do.  The groove underneath might allow the paper to give under the crimp instead of shearing the patch.

I load with Hodgdon's Lil' Gun.  You can load 100% density loads with this quite easily - which seems to be a factor in maintaining patch integrity.  I've found I reach 100% density around 16.9 grains, the max load is 18 grains.  4227 would be another powder that can be loaded with compression.  I've seen recipes in which even the 90%load is compressed.

I do not load with any sort of wax wad.  The bullets I have do not have a base cavity.  I twist the tails, then nip them off when dry.

Recovered bullets show the twisted paper at the base forms it's own cavity when the powder goes off.

Hello,
I finally got to the range.
I should have stood home.
I fired a dozen different loads with 2 powders and 2 bullets.
All shooting was at 50 yards.
My best group was almost 4 inches.
The good news is that I should be able to improve on that.
