  My son,  grandchildren and great grandchildren..whether in person or on the phone..when saying goodbye..rarely miss a chance to say..I love you dad, or I love you grandpa !
  It is something that came more from my wife's side than mine..  Just wonder if others get those kind of reassuring words from loved ones...or are we oddball?

Nope! My kids, and grandkids close every phone call or visit with I love you. We've done it all their lives, and mine.

We always say it when talking to our daughter and she returns it.

Any time Nancy or my self leaves the house etc. we ALWAYS say I LOVE YOU.

You just never know if you'll see them again.

  That is great to hear guys!  As bugeye said "You just never know if you'll see them again."
 
  that is why it is so treasured by me. My parents were rather reserved with any show of affection, as were My grandparents on their other side.

  However, my wife's family were not bashful about admitting they love one another.  My mother-in-law was a champion class hugger!  A very special lady !
