montana arms,
the 300 is more versatile and packs the same or greater power. There is nothing the 7mm can do that the 300 can't but for the largest of dangerous game animals the 300 offers more. It comes down to just what you need for what you do.

Hodgdon, Lyman, Speer, Sierra, Hornady = reliable resources
so and so's pages on the internet = not reliable resources
Alway check loads you find on the internet against manuals.

I need a good all around hunting rifle. Will hunt elk, bear, deer with some shots out past 300 yards. I was hunting with a 300 win mag but sold it. Now I need a new rifle. I just dont know between the two.

The 300 is a better round. Get another 300 and dont look back. :-)

I also looked at this situation several years ago. I studied the shooters bible and two rounds stood out above the rest for flat shooting and retained energy out to 300-400 yards. Those two rounds were the 7mm RM and the 300 WM. Both rounds are very versatile. You can load them with lighter bullets for smallgame and heavy bullets for larger game. If you only have one rifle, one of these two calibers should be the one. As far as which one is better....you can't go wrong with either one! Don't look for either one of these rounds to be obsolete any time soon.

The 7mm will have less recoil and out to 300 yds whatever you shoot at wont care what cal you are using. But the 300win is not one of the most popular 30 cals out there for nothing. I had the same choice and took the 7mm because of the lighter recoil.
