Economists urge Congress to send out second round of $1,200 stimulus checks

Stimulus checks are an 'essential tool' in staving off rise in poverty, economists wrote.

Trump and Biden teams ‘need to coordinate’ coronavirus response during transition: Leavitt

Former Health & Human Services Secretary Mike Leavitt says a smooth presidential transition will make the vaccine rollout process more effective.

A group of more than 125 economists is calling on Congress to send out more direct cash payments to American families to help them weather the coronavirus pandemic and subsequent economic downturn.

“We urge policymakers to use all the tools at their disposal to revitalize the economy, including direct cash payments, which are one of the quickest, most equitable and most effective ways to get families and the economy back on track,” the economists wrote in an open letter published Monday.

Signatories included Jason Furman, a top economist for former President Barack Obama, Alan Blinder, a former Federal Reserve board vice-chairman, and Claudia Sahm, a former Fed economist. The initiative was spearheaded by the Economic Security Project, which advocates for guaranteed income.

The federal government sent out stimulus checks earlier this year as part of the $2.2 trillion CARES Act, which Congress passed in March.

The money could be substantial, particularly for low-income individuals who qualified for the maximum one-time payment of $1,200 (or $2,400 for couples). The payments were tapered for higher-earners and phase out completely for individuals who earn more than $99,000. Children under the age of 17 also received a check for $500.

BIDEN CALLS FOR ERASING SOME STUDENT LOAN DEBT, FACES PROGRESSIVE PRESSURE TO GO FURTHER

The economists called stimulus checks an "essential" tool in preventing an increase in poverty.

A study published by the Center on Poverty and Social Policy at Columbia University in June found that without the passage of the $2.2 trillion CARES Act, one measure of the nation's poverty level would have surged to 16.3% from 12.8% pre-crisis. (During the 2008 financial crisis, the poverty level peaked around 16%, according to the U.S. Census Bureau).

"While the economy continues on the path to recovery, it’s critical that we quickly implement a robust stimulus to help promote a sustained and racially equitable recovery and help families and businesses get back on their feet," they wrote.

Although there is broad support among members of both parties to pass another coronavirus relief bill with a fresh round of stimulus checks, they disagree sharply over the size and scope of it. House Democrats maintain that at least $2.2 trillion in aid is needed, while Republicans have repeatedly expressed support for a "highly targeted" bill that would cost around $500 billion.

With just eight legislative days left on their calendar, Congress appears increasingly unlikely to overcome a monthslong impasse and strike a relief deal before the end of the year.

Better contact the Republican lawmakers to have them support the Democratic version since the Republican version has NO $1200 CHECK...  I guess the economists are urging Republicans to come to the table with more stimulus.

The Republican plan is best...and would be even far better if Biden's pals had not sent the Covid thing throughout the world !

Dee,

Where were you when Mr Trump increased the deficit and debt???  Last 4 years of Mr Obama, deficit was $3507 Billion 4 years of Mr Trump (without covid relief) $4327 Billion???

Why do we forget about the national debt when there is a Republican President - we should be mindful under ALL Presidents.

Obviously you missed the word "more" in my comment. Which further enforces the fact you have "selective reading and comprehension".

Virtually the very first thing our constitution calls for, is to "provide for the common defense".
It is a given... that when Democrats get into power, they drain our military down to where it is in desperate straits. Then when the Republicans get back into office, they have to start the rebuilding process all over again, which is VERY costly..

And yet military spending has remained markedly stable from 2008 through 2019 between $600 and $700 Billion each year with $711 Billion in 2011 and $719 Billion in 2019.  Bush II years saw it increase from ~$302 Billion in 2000 to $556 Billion in 2007 it topped at $621 Billion in 2008 Bushes last year.   What "given" are we talking about??

Spending by the Bush admin climbed, led by the costs in the middle east wars.  However, the wars continued and still, the financing declined.   Then, as Pres Trump started pulling troops out of the ME..the funding still increased, which I would view as replacing depleted resources, and introducing new systems.

There is strong probability that even then, we were getting better value for our expenditures.  Trump is a hard bargainer..to wit; the new presidential air fleet !

If the peace efforts the president is engineering with the Arab nations and Israel goes through, as it likely will if he stays in office, we will probably realize a great money saving dividend.
However, if the oval office changes hands, will those efforts be dropped like a hot potato! Will we go back to financing the disruptive efforts by Iran?
