Can't speak for other areas.
Around this neighborhood and
surrounding areas people that
are "homeless " are that way
because they enjoy getting drunk
and/or high. Simple as that.
I've seen it many many times.
I can point out many of the cardboard
sign crew,  and those that work
the parking lots. Used to be a
small "camp " a couple of blocks up
here on an overgrown vacant lot,
but someone came in with a small
track loader and a demo dumpster
and cleaned it all up.

There are no 'homeless' anywhere near where I live.  However, for the treatments i am now taking, I have to drive to the closest thing in my county, to what may be considered a city, which has a population of just under 14,000.
  There is a Mall there, which is about at the end of it's rope, with only about half the stores operating.  Since it is cold now, i often stop by there after treatment, to do some walking.

  There is one homeless that I noted.. a woman perhaps 50 yrs old.  She just seems to go in there to escape the cold...and has her overloaded grocery cart with her.
 Now that I am nearing the end of the treatments, i think I will donate some $$$ to her.  ..But I won't do it until then, just so she has no further opportunity to badger me.

to drink. Or barring that, take her in
