Camo Turkey 12 guage barrel and foreend will get about $325 of it on a good day.  Season is coming if you hunt turkeys.

Do you reload?
And you live in Michigan, hmm.  Well, 500 would get 2 barrels, but not scoped.
But, you need a complete set-up for $500.00.  And you live in Michigan.
My choice would be a FoxRidge 35 Whelen, and Bushnell 3200 elite 3-9x40 with Interlock rings and mount. Come to about $475.00 + S/H. With a few extra bucks you can get dies!

how about a factory .300 mag no sights and a decent butt stock and foreend....may just have enough leftover to get some scope mounts etc.

If I had $500 then Id go to Virgin Valley, order a full, straight octagoned barrel in 50/70 and get a schnable fore end and buttstock to match.  But hey Im just crazy like that   .

Unless you are drooling for a big game caliber, I would go with a good varmit caliber with an 8x32 Burris. Say a 22/250 or maybe hold off until the 204 Ruger is made in the Encore barrels. Nothing like spoiling a coyote's day at 500 yards, especially when you know he was wondering what that bright flash was he just seen..........SMACK!

I would take a look around and figure out all the little things I need but never get around to getting.  Having the right tools for any hobby makes life much easier.  Then buy a barrel and scope.  Some have had problems with factory barrels but I never found one I couldn't get to shoot and even if they don't send it back.
