i watch michigan's out of doors every week because for some reason we get detroit PBS, and the past 2 weeks they've had stories about the first wolverine seen in michigan. isn't michigan called the wolverine state? they said it was seen on "the thumb" is that on the UP or LP?

Hi guys.

That was the first wolverine seen in Michigan in over 100 years.  They were native to the state but were driven to extinction by habitat loss and over-harvesting.  It must've wandered in from the south.

We used to have grayling here in the Manistee and Au Sauble Rivers, amongst others, (even have the City of Gayling) but they went extinct here when we lumbered off Michigan flatter'n Europe during the World Wars.

Things are much improved.

Yeah the nickname only stuck, due to the success of the college football team. I didn't know Grayling no longer swim the rivers of Michigan.
