5.5" or 7.5" SBH Bisley
« on: March 11, 2004, 10:08:18 AM »
I'm going to buy a SBH, but which one :?
SBH hunter 7.5" Bisley
SBH Bisley 7.5"
SBH SS 5.5" Bisley
I will be using it for hunting, open sight's and scope. under 100yd.
Plinking and paper punching.
Mostly 200-240gr. bullet's
I am getting a 10" bull .44 for my Contender  for the longer shot's.
so for what I have descibed would a 5.5" or 7.5" be better
Will I gain much in vel. and Acc. with a 7.5" over the 5.5"
Gimme lot's of advice, never owned a SBH.

personally i dont care for a barrel over 5.5 on a single action but if insist on scoping it the extra weight of a 7.5 isnt going to matter and its alot easier to put one on a hunter.

If you're intending on scoping this gun, go with the Hunter model as it comes with rings and mounting provisions.  That way you won't need to drill/tap the topstrap.   Ones I own that match what you've mentioned consist of a 45 Hunter, a  6 1/2"  41 BH that I scoped (drill/tap) and a 5 1/2" Bisley.  I've yet to shoot the 45 Hunter but as far as comfortable hold, the Bisley is my preference.  Were I to scope the Hunter I'd say that with heavy loads, it would be the nicest simply because of the weight.
Were I to reccommend one to you, I'd say go witha iron sighted shorter bbl Bisley.  Balance is better and that diff. in bbl length isn't going to make any real differences.   If you've already got the T/C for longer shots, the non-scoped Ruger will be easier packin' too.

I recently got the Ruger SBH Hunter Bisley(SS, gray laminate) in 44mag with a 7½" bbl and man I love that pistol!  I have put around 300 rounds through it in the last 2 weeks and it feels like there is hardly any recoil shooting 240's.  It is accurate as well.  I think I might put a Bushnell 3200 2-6x with firefly recticle on it and take it on a hog hunt this June to hunt at night.  Would be fun I think.  It's a great pistol.  Don't know if it would be better shorter or not?

I bought the SBHH Bisley a few weeks ago myself,I haven't fired it scoped yet but I do like the feel of it sans scope much better. Right now I'm not sure if I'm going to hunt with it scoped as its proven plenty accurate at the distances I'd likely be shooting anyway. Now if I can just find one of the Acusport 5 1/2ers!

Not quite sure why you think a 10" 44 Mag scoped Contender will be any better for longer shots than a 7.5" scoped SBH.  The 44 Mag is a 125 yd gun either way.  I'd opt for a bottlenecked Contender round if you want to stretch the range beyond 125 yds.

Gregory:
I was thinking 5.5" or 7.5" non scoped compared to the scoped contender.
And I have a 14" 7-30 Waters for the contender, good for 200yd.

I have located a new 5.5" SS bisley and love the feel of it compared to the 7.5" and I believe it would be a better gun to pack around, my question is would I gain any noticable amount in Vel. or Acc. with the 7.5" compaired to the 5.5" both non scoped.
Would the 5.5" be enough for deer and pig out to 75yd.
Without a scope I want it to be able to print 2.5" group's at 50yd.

2.5 inches of barrel isn’t going to make a difference in killing an animal as far as bullet performance goes. I think I read somewhere the rule of thumb is 25-30fps/inch of barrel. The shooters ability to shoot the gun to its potential might though.

I think 2.5” groups at 50 yards is a pretty stiff requirement for most any hand gun. You may or may not get that from a Ruger. Four inch groups at 50 would probably be more realistic.
