Stuck Firing Pin
« on: June 16, 2013, 06:30:28 PM »

I have the old style Contender pistol.  Maybe 8 years ago I sent it back to the factory as the firing pin had stuck.
I was able to separate the frame and barrel and returned just the frame.  It came back fixed with a newer-style firing pin set-up, all at no charge.

Fast forward to today:  I am shooting the Contender in .22 rimfire and teaching the GF's kid to shoot.  I noticed he was jerking the trigger, so after he shot, I took the pistol and re-cocked for him and had him 'shoot' again.  But with the same, now empty, rimfire case in the barrel.  Well, it didn't like the 2nd strike on the same rimfire case, and the firing pin stuck.
I can't break the barrel open.  It's stuck pretty good, I would say.

Any suggestions?  I will try a local pistol smith I guess, or send the entire pistol back to the factory..which I would like to avoid if possible.

Thanks
-Jim

I doubt it is the firing pin that is causing it to stick closed......never heard that before but you never know........ More likely that the locking lugs are not being released, causing the barrel to remain locked. Try tapping the hinge pin off and then trying to open / take the barrel right off. You may need to use a screwdriver or similar, to push the barrel locking bolt forward, as in deeper into the barrel towards the muzzle, so it unlocks.

Once you get the barrel released from the frame you can determine if the f/p is stuck forward. If it is it may be broken or the spring may be broken. Hammer springs and a set of F/P and springs should be in your repair kit. Removing the breech block will allow you to replace these parts if broken. rp

Thanks for the suggestions.
I can clearly see the rimfire firing pin is depressed further than the center-fire pin.  There is no doubt the RF pin is stuck in the firing position.
I am not sure why this happened, but I am wondering if the 2nd strike in the same position actually drove the FP into the rimfire case and stuck there?

Anyway, the problem is beyond my skill-set, so I dropped it off with a local gunsmith.
I should get it back in a few days, and we'll see if there's anything else wrong (broken springs, etc).
My Contender pistol, while it is an older one, is very lightly used and well-cared for.

This frame was originally my dads, and after his death I became the new owner.
He probably only used the pistol a few times since he bought it new.

The first time I had a problem with the firing pin being stuck was right after I brought it home from my dads house, several years ago.  I guess it was gummed up or something from sitting around for years.  There is no rust on the frame anywhere; dad took excellent care of his firearms.
A trip back to the factory made everything work perfectly up until last weekend.

It still looks like new and I really enjoy shooting it, especially my rimfire barrels.

Thanks again for the suggestions.  I really appreciate it.
