Caldwell Field Pod??
« on: January 28, 2013, 09:51:59 AM »
Has anyone had hands on with the Caldwell Field Pod?  Could it be used for a handgun rest, ie, will the forehand rest and stock rest slide in enough to support a handgun?  And can the stock rest fork be removed so a pad could be put in place to support the rear of a handgun?
Can't really tell from online pictures and description doesn't mention moving the two rests in.  I'm talking about quick setup when stalking.  It does look like it would be more sturdy than my cheap camera tripod setup.
Thanks,
Charlie

I just purchased one. Have only tried it once so far with a rifle, and not as steady as i thought it would be. Want to use it instead of laying down with a bipod. As far as a pistol, i think it will take some major modification. Like i said,it is still new to me. Maybe someone else will have different thoughts.

i dont have one but made one just like it. Its a great rest. I bit to big and bulky to carry around when walking though. I use mine when i hunt out of those portable pop up blinds.

Any more info on this? I built one using a camera tripod and the boggear extreme rest which I can interchange with my bench rest. It is not as stable as I would like. I would like to find one of the Caldwells I could put my hands on before buying it.

Simple answer YES. It may not be the best, but I just went in and adjusted it a little and and it can be setup for a handgun by just loosening up and rejusting a little.

I got mine and yes it will work for a handgun. Not so much for spot and stalk as in run and gun because it is a bit heavy and takes a bit of manipulation to set up. Also it is not tall enough for standing shots. Sitting on the side of a hill glassing not a problem, seated in a blind would be fine.
Set up like the first pic I can sight in with my arm fully extended and resting on the platform. All I had to do to remove the yokes was trim some plastic off of the plugs in the bottom of the tube. After that they just slide out and can be swapped. All around adjustment is simple and stable.
This is what I did for the butt rest. A slab of rubber with holes. It's acually an exhaust hanger.

Not the heaviest crossbow but it holds it.

I have not shot off of it but I can tell it will be fine and more stable than mine. Although it is a bit heavier to achieve the stability.
