Getting ready to order a HS Precision Sporter and am leaning toward 270win due to availablity of different bullets/ammo as I do not reload. This gun will be used exclusively for whitetails in the southeast so 130grn is all I'll need. However, a friend is trying to convince me to go with the 270wsm. After comparing the ballistics, I see the 270wsm drops 1 inch less at 300 yds and has about 300 more fps at 200 yds. Doesn't seem like a big difference to me. Am I missing something?

You are certainly NOT "missing anything" at all!

The time-proven, classic, GREAT .270 Winchester can do everything the johnny-come-lately .270 WSM can do, PERIOD!

The best rationale for choosing the .270 Win is that by not being a handloader, you can get standard factory loads almost anywhere. Try that with the new wonder cartridges that may not be around in a few years!

Have no fear the WSM line of cartridges are selling like hot cakes. As more and more of them are sold the price will come down and more and different loads will become available. I can remember when Winchester first brought out the .243 Winchester. There were only two loads for it and everyone said it wasn't big enough for deer size animals. They also said it wouldn't last either because we had the .257 Roberts which was a much better cartridge for deer. I wish I had a dollar for every .243 Win. chambered rifle ever made and a quarter for every box of ammo. Personally I like the .270 WSM with all of it's advantages and am considering getting one in a Savage rifle. Lawdog

th.270 wsm is just a more powerful .270.. I have a .270 and it is great on whitetail, hog. I would GO for the wsm... might as well it is just as good and in the same caliber. GO with the wsm if u can get it for around the same price.(then u can use it for about anything/elk,etc.)

If i was you I would buy the 270win because like you said you don't handload. The wsm's probably will be around for a long time and the 270win WILL be around forever. There may be a little advantage of the wsm but it ain't much and the 270win is already an excellent long range caliber that doesn't drop much and has very respectable velocities. A deer will not know the difference between a bullet out of a 270win and a 270 wsm when hit properly. A 270win is big enough to take elk with the right bullets. Buy the 270win it WILL be around forever and ammo is much cheaper and abundant, and it will perform every bit as good as a wsm.

I own both the 270 Win and the 270WSM. The WSM kicks a bit more, and I would guess packs a bit more of a whollop on the other end, but I haven't used it on game yet, so I can't confirm or deny.

Yes, the selection of WSM ammo is growing, but it is nowhere close to the regular ammo.

Go with the .270 Winchester, it's my favorite for javelina to elk. You :bye: won't see a difference in the field either.
