But Pete when you carried them sidehammers in the woods  you did not have a choice after all centerfire cartridges did  not become popular until the 1870's  ;D and you were done shooting at the Confederates by then!

It's all relative. Try lugging a 12 Gauge Ultra Slug Hunter around for a while and a bull barrel centerfire Handi will feel like an ultra light.
