30-30AI, 300 Whisper, 300 BLK OR 7x57R?
« on: February 17, 2013, 06:52:55 AM »
I am about to rebarrel a Ruger #3 I was thinking straight walled pistol round but wanted some info on the medium deer rounds I thought about in the past. I want to use the rifle for hunting deer and hogs, I will not be taking shots more than 150 yards because of the terrain I live in(western NC). I like the idea of a short 16" to 20" barrel but am open to longer if better for the round.
The 30-30ai and 7x57 were the talk of the town when I was a kid. I have no experience with them. But always seamed mysteries.

The 300 Whisper and 300 BLK I don't know squat about, how are they for hunting? I ask because I have lots of extra 223 brass.
Info on barrel length and twist if possible.
Thanks

The 30-30AI would be a great one. You can shoot regular 30-30 Win in it also and end up with a 30-30AI case. It is a very accurate with the 30-30 Win ammo. I have a 14" barrel Contender pistol in 30-30AI and with IMR 4198 I safely get 2670 fps with a 125 gr Nosler ballistic tip. It is super accurate and kills deer dead in their tracks. At these velocities the 125 BT is perfectly constructed for deer size game. I have shot 7 deer with the combo from just over 100 yards in to 30 yards with most shots going into one shoulder and usually exiting through the other shoulder. All 7 have exited with quarter size holes and all but two deer dropped in their tracks. Those two were bucks all fired up in the rut after does and they did not go over three jumps before being down for the count. Lee makes a set of loading dies for the 30-30AI the does not break your bank and they are really good dies. They are what I use. Match Grade Machines made my barrel. It is a stainless Shilen.

I like your idea.   Either the 30-30 AI or the 7 X 57 R would be great.   Forget the 300 blk out , its a good cartridge but not what you need.  I have recomended the 7 X 57 R alot as I built a single shot break action in this cal. and really like it.
Some people think that ammo or brass for it would be expensive, Not So !    Graf and sons has 3 different brands of factory loaded ammo in 7 X 57 R for under $ 20.00 a box and its good stuff.
If you buy just brass you may pay more for it than loaded ammo  ???  but thats the way it is.

I know you want something differnt but whats wrong with the standard good old 3030. Some dont realize that its downloaded to pretty low pressures and in a good strong gun and with a pointed bullet can eaisily be a 250 yard deer round.

There is nothing wrong with the the good old 30-30 win. I like it. The thing is I am going to spending the money to rebarrel. It the same price either way(to high at that). So I thought if I am going custom go all the way. I have to get the action refinished, a new set of wood and rebarrel. Looking like the most expensive gun will own.
30-30 ai seams the way to go for this project.
Thanks

if you want to rebarrel and want to take advantage of plentyful cases how about the 730 waters. Its easy to make them out of 3030 cases. Its something a bit differnt and its a deer killing sob out to 250 yards.

Since you like the 30-30, but want something different at the same time, the 30-30AI is a no-brainer. Unlike the other rounds you mentioned & others mentioned, the 30-30 ammo is as common as it gets , which is nice if you need factory ammo in a pinch. And also, you sometimes can find deals on ammo that has been sitting around for awhile.
You made a good choice indeed!!

After shooting a H&R 444 Marlin this weekend I am going to go with a big bore. I liked the way it felt. I really got my blood pumping! I guess that's why I love my shotgun and slugs.

30/30AckleyIMproved....been there, done did that...and it works GREAT! [H&R, not a Ruger #].
I'd do it all over again, too. I've owned a LOT of different rifles/cartridges, and the PLAIN JAIN OLD THUTTY THUTTY, is STILL a great round. If you can't get it done with an accurate 30/30 and good quality bullets,.....well...nuff said.

Well I'll be the odd man out! ::)  Go with the 300 Blk in a 18" barrel.  You can load 150 Speer BT's and you got a very effective rifle out to 250 yards!  More then enough for your small deer in NC.  ;D
