308 Mauser 98 action
« on: January 30, 2004, 02:31:20 AM »
I have a custom rifle built with a mauser 98 action chambered in 308. I had it build for the purpose of hunting with it. Well I have another rilfe better suited for that purpose now. Well, I plan on tinkering around with this 308 now and turning it into a sniper rifle of sorts. So, it needs some remodeling done on it. Basically, another stock mainly, and I am a reloader so I need to work up some better loads for it. I am struggleing on what kind of stock to get for it. Anyone  have any suggestions? Or ideas? Any input is welcome. I also will be going with a Leupold scope but I don't know which one yet. What would be the best one for long range shooting? Thanks

98 Mauser in 308

rpseven:  check out the Shotgun News or Shooter's Supply - I have seen stocks for the 98s advertised in both.

Basically, I would think that any good stock should serve you well, if you properly bed the action.  You mentioned turning it into a sniper rifle of sorts as you have another rifle better suited to (the type of) hunting you do.  The 308 is an excellent caliber for those who prefer it, although I am very happy with the accuracy and power of my 8mms.

You mentioned another stock - how is she stocked now and why is that not satisfactory for your intentions?????  Mikey.

I just got a catalog in the mail from one of the mail order gun dealers (can't remember who), and in the catalog they had a semi inletted stock for the '98 with an adjustable buttpad & cheek piece.  I will try to remember to post the name of the catalog over the weekend.

The stock on it now isn't to bad. It's a wood stock it needs some bedding work done with it. I will probably work with some to see what I can do with it since my money tree never took root and grew. I'll see how it will turn out.

If your work on the stock doesn't pan out, check out Houge's new rifle stocks.  They are nice for the grip they afford, not hollow sounding.  I've been thinking of getting one after seeing one at a gunshow, they run about a hundred bucks with pillar bedding, and $180-200 with aluminum frame and pillar bedding.
