cable T.V.=junk
« on: January 09, 2013, 11:46:52 AM »
My wife finally gave up the worst thing you can have in a home.  The TV. I have tried for a while to get her to dump the worthless crap. Yesterday she mentioned getting rid of cable. I said call them now, today I took the cable box in and wanted to throw it through the door but was polite and gave it to them and left.
Cable= an absolute waste of human mind and soul.

Cable tv or dish is a rip off. I pay for all these channels, but only watch a handful of them. Mostly sporting events. I don't even watch any of the what they call news channels, including Fox. I do believe that the TV media, and the reality tv shows, are making people stupid. That along with government run education, ignorance is running rampant.

I didn't know one had to watch Fox news to keep informed. Or any of the other government run media outlets.

My wife is a TV junkie and will watch absolute crap. The shows I watch wouldn't take up all five fingers on one hand. I spend more time on the computer than in front of the tube.

The history channels are about the only thing worth watching and their ratings reflect that fact.
Mankind the history of us, was the most watched TV show in its time frame over everything else
combined. When these two channels first started the critics said it would never last.
But now they are the most requested channels on any network. A&E got in an argument with Dish
over their programming so Dish dumped them. Dish lost so many subscribers that they had to go
back to A&E with their hat in their hand . And it was all over a stupid zombie apocalypse series
called the walking dead.

If it was not for someone posting a news (lie) item on a forum I would not see or hear news all day. I quit watching well before the election.
I decided I am not going to support those that are helping destroy us. My wife handles the bills and when I saw how much cable was.....Crap, what a fool I have been.

Been off work for 4 days. No TV at home. Nothing at work on cable worth watching. News hasn't changed in a few years now. If it does change to a major extent someone always calls me. If not may I go in peace. ear

Balance is the key.
My wife sleeps thru a handful of Soaps in the afternoon--it is a good nap.
I like the movies & I record a number of TV shows that I like--but I watch them at my convenience not their primetime convenience.
I try and stay out of the house as much as possible. I know that I will die, but I hope it isn't in front of the TV.
On the other hand, the TV is good for a nap--and I like naps.
Like Anna--The history cahnnels are informative, but I find disagreement in them-----Good for the mind, I think.

I think they did a fair job on the Mankind series, but I don't feel they covered the American Civil War
all that well as to its importance. The part about the cholera epidemic was good I didn't know it had
been that extensive in its body count. And I do disagree with them a lot but I still feel its the best
programming out there right now. William like the Mankind series they are putting together one like it
called The Bible. Now that is going to be interesting and extremely challenging for them.

But I give them a lot of credit for at least trying it especially in today's world. Dish isn't announcing it
guys but they do have a new programming package they put together out of popular demand.
It premiers the history channels and Encore for about $21.00 a month. No Sci Fi :-( but no CCN or
FOX news either. No MTV, or a whole slew of those channels I never liked paying for before at an
expensive price. If I want to hear or see it I can always go to the web or get it from Net flicks or pay on demand.

It's about time that someone did this, for years I have complained to them about paying so much to
only get a couple of channels that  I watched. I miss the Sci Fi but oh well it was becomeing the
WWE smackdown anyway. And if I want to see another zombie apocalypse I can always drive to town or watch my neighbors every Friday night getting drunk. :o

TV is commercials occasionally being interrupted by a program of some kind.

Ain't that the truth, and if you look at a movies run time a two hour movie is four hours long !
Way past my bedtime to watch a movie I've seen 100 times that they play over and over.
I do like the GEICO commercials though, especially the one where the antelopes are wearing night
vision goggles watching a lion.  " we can like totally see you Carl lol. "

I pulled the plug on cable TV 2 or 3 years ago and aside from a sporting event I would like to catch from time to time I don't really miss it.

In fact I only have one working TV in the house.  A real oddity in this day and age where a lot of folks have one in just about every room of the house.

By the way, I have always referred to the TV as "the one eyed brain eater".  ;)

Im getting rid of cable. I found amazon has shows for 99 cents  and movies for 10 bucks. and then you own them. I just bought the first season of' boardwalk empire' on amazon. The hbo series of Rome, Deadwood, boardwalk and even the sopranos are worth a watch. But those stupid storage and pawn shows are pitifull.

Maybe our cable system is unique, because it does have a lot of informative and entertaining channels and all of our sets (yup--one in just about every room) are capable of channel changing.  We aren't forced to watch anything we don't want to.  Just like books, magazines, newspapers, radio and all the rest, you have to exercise discretion and choice.  By the way, there is every bit as much crap--actually more--on the Internet.  But there again it's a matter of choice.

It's difficult to describe tv, cable, as anything other than imoral. Even Disney often has things i won't allow my grandchildren to see.
As Anna has stated, the upcoming show, The Bible, should be interesting. Sadly i have seen the History channel in the past portray God's word in an untrue light. To the point that if they advertised a show pertaining to our Lord i just avoided it. However, as of late they seem to have taken the correct avenue on this subject. Even in thier commercials.
I'm willing to give them another chance and have a look at The Bible. But as Anna stated, it should be  "extreemly challenging " for them.
I won't even go near the national geographic channel for this reason.
We recently started a Netflix subsciption. Good choices in there and hard to beat fer $7 a month. ;)

I second the Netflix plug.   Good selection of movies.  Not the most recent releases but if you are willing to wait a few months your fine.   Also pretty good selection of TV shows, especially oldies.

I used to look forward to cable when traveling at motels, but really don't anymore. History channel and sometimes food network are about the only things I've found interesting recently. Animal Planet used to be good, but I haven't seen good stuff in a while, mostly dog shows and such.

I really liked Bob Munden when he was on a shooting show, and the man called Croc Hunter, Steve Erwin. Both are unfortunately gone now, rest in peace. I also liked the original Japanese Iron Chef shows. Don't care for the American version.
