Gun show find.....
« on: January 07, 2013, 01:10:04 PM »

Well, this is my gun show find from Sunday. HY sn prefix, 243 win standard setup with an ugly paint job. She locks up tight but it was really heavy, guy told me there was a weight in the buttstock. Took me an hour to pull the 21.5oz steel rod wrapped in masking tape stuck the stock bolt hole. Should be fun playin with this year.

I got a 12 ga. shotgun someone had done that to with a steel rod.  Rammed a bunch of lead fishing weights in first and I had more trouble digging the lead out from around the bolt head than anything.  lol

I just picked up an older 30-30 and I want to change the stocks. For some reason Bubba packed paper towels in the bolt hole. I found a long screw and twisted it into the packing. One by one they came out but it took a while. I don't know what their thinking was.

Are you going to strip the paint off?
I have more guns than I need, but not as many as I want.

if it's a good shooter, i'd leave it
as is. if you were a thief, would you
pick that one up first?
i have one i've been wanting to krylon
myself, but the stock is the best
factory-fitted one i've ever had
(even if it is a pallet wood)
i had to (wanted to) move the sling
stud to the correct position and i
doweled the old hole, but never
re-finished over the repair. all
this last year sitting in my shotgun
spot looking at that stock i thought
" i'll just spraycan this whole rig"
then " no. . .this stock sure was well
fitted- it deserves a proper re-finish,
and that great color case-hardening
can't be had anymore"

so goes the addiction. . . . . . :(

FWIW, a solid steel slug should be drilled and tapped BEFORE it is installed to be able to get a 'pull bolt' screwed in later. For a stuck one like yours I would try D/T'ing it. A long bolt with a washer at the head and a slide handle will pop a stuck one out.
But the real question is,"How does it smoke?"........
