2005 BC question
« on: January 05, 2013, 06:36:24 AM »
I'm interested in another BC this one was made in 2005 serial prefix HV (in like new condition), but I would like to know how a 2005 BC made by Marlin (if I'm right) compare to one made by Remington? $350 for the gun is reasonable?

Forget it, I just received some pics of the actual gun and this one has been modified with a tang sight.

I wouldn't pass it up if the price is right. I've been shooting Cowboy Action for several years and I've seen a few with added tang sights. The Buff Classic is a popular gun for Cowboy Long Range. If they did a good job installing the sight it's an added bonus. There is no tang so the sight has to be attached to the wood stock.
I have more guns than I need, but not as many as I want.

Unless they added a false tang, Handirifle had one done on his BC.  ;)

There really isnt a downside to a tang sight attached to the wood, some real vintage target rifles had just so done. The oft repeated 'wood changes with humidity' effects on a wood mounted tang sight has never actually been documented as far as I know......At a shoot we all sight in anyway and just the light conditions cause more trouble day to day that that sight will (unless you are in that rarefied air of the true long range competitors).
At that price, if c/w the tang sight its likely a good buy; even though it isnt going to be an expensive tang sight, it could work out well.

Done correctly with steel inserts in the wrist instead of just wood screws in the thin wood above the stock bolt, it works fine, seems to me that's how John Boy did his BC when he mounted a vernier sight for his 1000yd buffalo shootin(FAQs), it's in one of the links in the Long Range sights FAQs link.

I agree that the threaded inserts are pretty trick, but after having some vintage rifles c/w tang sights mounted on tangs with as small as #5x40 softish screws Im not too concerned with a decent pair of well fitted wood (or better to me, sheet metal type) screws. If you drop or bang the tang sight hard enough to bend or bust out either youve got big sight problems.
Good point about that thinnish wood above the thru-bolt, its easy to forget since we dont see it. It will especially be an issue if you rework the wrist to thin off some more of that proud factory wood.
