45-70 stainless ultra hunter
« on: December 01, 2012, 05:57:00 AM »
A couple of years ago I sold my 45-70 barrel to 26-T & would like to replace it.  I have set up the kids with that frame I am thinking about buying a stainless ultra hunter.  A few questions that i did a lot of searching & couldn't find the answer for here.
1.  I would like to pickup a target varmit forend from Gunstocks inc.  Does any of there wood match the laminate thumbhole stock?  Anyone try this or have any experience with that particular forened.  Reason being the last 45-70 I had setup would jump out of my front hand with gloves on & I would like something a little more robust to hang on to & the target varmit from gunstocks looks like the best option.
2.  Anyone add sites to the stainless ultra hunter barrel?
3.  Is there a better recoil pad that is a direct replacement for the thumbhole stock this comes with as the one picture doesn't look real great on heavy loads.
I have really missed this site & look forward to hangin out here more.  Thanks for all the great info!

I have a Boyd's/H&R green lam stock on my SS Ultra Hunter, it came with a Decelarator pad, but I'm pretty sure it's a grind to fit pad, Boyd's has some of their H&R stocks on sale, but they have the standard H&R pad on them, they also sell forends.

I have the UH but put my Cin. Lam Ultra Varmint wood on; same 'beavertail' forestock shape and I dont have any problem gripping it, but I dont really try to hold down my rifle either. Grip it hard one time and loose the next and the POI will change vertically, so I, from much target work, tend to use the same 'loose in the hand' hold on everything (except Ol' Ugy Overkill, the 12ga. slug vicious kicking beast). I guess if you are intending to use nasty 45-70 loads I can understand that desire for a firm hold, but in loads for normal mortals?..........
But, if you must, how about reshaping your H&R wood?

Ive considered putting iron sights on mine, the basic BC type peep, or the Skinner, etc. in back and a ramp front with the one screw hole rather than cut an unsightly dovetail. But, Im having such good results with the scope on it, and the scope does not look out of place on this rifle, that I have not done sights.

picked it up yesterday after the background 3 day delay.  Could of had it christmas eve, but guess they thought I was a bad guy.  I Really like it & wish I would of got one sooner.  It is gonna need a fatter recoil pad before I get into the real mule kickers.  That pad is pretty thin.  I am trying to piece together some reloading stuff as after christmas my wallet is pretty thin.  Got a scope & will get some mounts on payday.

Use it some before you give up on the factory pad; mine works just fine for any sane load.

Congrats on the Ultra Hunter. Saw one at Cabelas a couple years ago but due to lack of funds I had to walk away. I really liked the feel of the thumbhole stock. It is still on my wish list but funds need to improve first. I agree that you should try it first before changing out pads. If you are using it for hunting you are usually padded up with extra cloths. On the bench you can always use some kind of padding between your shoulder and the stock. Since you are reloading you can modify your loads to what you are comfortable with. But admit it, sometimes getting kicked like a mule can be a little fun. Usually brings a smile to the shooter and those around.

Thanks Tim, I done a lot of searching in the archives, is the tsx fb your replacement for the 300 grain nosler partition that is no longer available?  Seen a lot of mention of Mac's 2400fps load with that.  I have been looking around at 300 grainers but not sure which one yet.
Anyone know how fast the hornady hollow point would hold up?  Does the speer stay together better at upper speeds?  Thanks

I haven't really chosen a 45-70 hunting bullet, I've yet to hunt with any of mine, as much as I love the 45-70, it's just not a 300yd rifle and where I hunt(my limit), shots well beyond that could be possible, so they've not been out with me.  ::)  I have others to try out too, the 300gr TTSX for one as well as the 300gr Nosler BT and Hornady FTX, even some 350gr Barnes Originals. On the Hornady, it's not made for anything over 2100fps MV according to the Hornady 8th, the 325gr FTX is good for 1300-2300fps MV, dunno about the Speer 300gr, but the 350gr is a great bullet from what I've read.

Probably my biggest hangup with the SS Ultra Hunter is the weight, it wouldn't be my first choice for a carry rifle, but for stand hunting which I don't do, it would be great. I do have a Talo Trapper 45-70 w/18¾" barrel which is light and Handi, I have loads with 405gr cast for it for a west side hunt if I ever draw a permit, maybe this year.

I really like the 350 gr. RNFP from Hornady.  Good smack and on deer it doesn't blow their legs off and stuff.  lol  Mine's going out under 49 gr. Reloader7 and hitting around 2150 fps if memory serves.  Plenty of punch for anything on this continent and most elsewhere.  ;)

Got that one covered already, 350gr Hornady over(not UNDER  ;D) 28gr 2400 for ~1500fps, peep sight adjusted after shots 1 & 2, 100yds w/22" Handi. The other one is the same bullet from the scoped BC w/H322.

Tacklebury, maybe I want to blow legs off n stuff ;)   My only experience out of the 22" barrel was with the 325grain leverolution.  I shot a doe 120 lbs about 70 yards out & the bullet did not exit.  Perfect hit behind the front leg, but I watched in disbelief as it made its way up the hill towards me, then about the time I thought I missed it fell over backwards.

Hehe then I highly recommend the 300 gr HP.  I shot a buck with that and the exit wound was bigger than my fist which isn't too small.  lol
