Anybody belong to The Gun Owners Of America?
« on: December 30, 2012, 09:55:12 AM »
Kindly keep on the subject. Threads like this usually end up in a screaming match. I am NOT a member of the NRA and won't be. It's a cash cow for a select few and their record is dismal at best. That's my opinion and my belief. But this thread is about the GOA. Any good news about the GOA or any bad news is appreciated. Considering where things are headed I need to get in somewhere but I'm looking for a group that represents the gun owners, not their personal pocketbook.
Again, kindly keep this on track. If you are in love with the NRA- that's fine. But my deceased FIL was on the Board of Directors of the NRA and know full well what happened when they escorted Neal Knox to the door. I won't be a part of it.

Unfortunately it's kind of the nature of the beasts.   Whether or not either of them (GOA or NRA) or any of them for that matter "represents you as a gun owner I don't know. I guess that would depend on where you personally draw the line in the sand as a gun owner.  Some gun owners subscibe to a no holds barred philosophy where others see the logic in choosing your battles.  I think that GOA's stance tends to be more toward the no holds barred but I'm not sure.

I like the GOA because they don't "compromise" with the antis. They believe the 2nd Amendment means what it says.

Pretty much the same reasons I belong to the GOA and not the NRA. It takes money to run any organization, and I don't mind doing my fair share. The GOA does more for my money than the NRA when it comes to on the ground defense of the second Amendment. If I could afford to belong to every organization out there defending us against the Gun Grabbers in office, I would! Fact is I can't so what little I have to give, I want it to do the most good. I support the GOA.

I belong to both but rarely open their junk mail. Doesn't bother me to file 13 it. Same with Institute For Justice and they win cases for every day people every year.  The stand they take is usually close to the way that I think. Wouldn't join AARP because they go against my grain too much. ear

Me too.  I heard them say that their membership was for more gun control.  they kinda remind me of a union.

From what I've seen it appears that the NRA is selective about what fights they are willing to take to court.  Because of that they have a very good record of winning cases.   Many gun owners don't like this approach saying they are weak others see it as a wise use of resources.

The GOA on the other hand seems to jump into every fight they hear about, but unfortunately often times get their butts handed to them in court.  Many of the hard core "don't give an inch" gun owners like their enthusiasm and feel that the GOA is the only organization that cares about them.  Others of us think they may as well be flushing money down the toilet by getting into fights they have no chance of winning.

No organization is perfect and I sure don't agree with everything the NRA does but I believe that they are the biggest and most powerful lobbying organization presently available. As such I think they are our best line of defense at this moment and like others hear I can only afford to help one pro gun organization at this time.   Maybe someday GOA will have the political clout of the NRA but that day has not come yet.

Neither one of them cost that much to join. So I encourage everyone to join one or both. It's the best way to be counted. You can join both for under $50. As for junk mail I requested to be removed from the mailing list and haven't got much from either.

Interesting comments, thanks. Has anybody considered the Second Amendment Foundation? I wasn't even aware of these guys.

And while I'm at it, has anyone considered or is a member of The Oath Keepers?
