New to me 45LC Classic Carbine
« on: December 11, 2012, 04:26:11 PM »
Just picked up a 45LC Classic Carbine.  I was curious to see how many people have them and what modifications you have made?  Like re-chamberings, sight changes/scopes or anything else to improve the gun!

Congrats!!  ;) I have two, I rechambered the first one to 460S&W, the second is unfired from the factory. Lots here have rechambered to 454 Casull with the GBO reamer, see the reamer sticky.

I have one - the only thing I have done to mine was send it in and get a 22 Hornet barrel that I immediately reamed to K Hornet.  The 45 barrel is still iron sights while the K hornet barrel is scoped. Haven't really put either one on paper but have had a lot of fun plinking with both barrels

I got mine a few weeks ago. I borrowed the site 454 Casull reamer and lengthened the chamber. On mine the forend was pressing on one side of the barrel but a few minutes with some sandpaper and a dowel fixed it. I put a rubber washer under the forend stud. I haven't fired any of the Casull rounds yet but it shoots great with 45 Colt ammo. It's got real nice colors on the receiver with lots of blue tones. I really like it. I would like to send it in and get a 30-30 barrel.
I have more guns than I need, but not as many as I want.

I have one that has seen some mods. I had the scope base and receiver modified to 8-40 screws, barrel recrowned, forend glass and pillar bedded, throat reamed for heavy cast bullets and the trigger has been tuned to 2.75lbs. It shoots right at 1" at 100 yds with a 335gr Cast Performance bullet and 2400. It also has been Duracoated in ACU gray/green and wears a cinnamon laminated stock set. The iron sights were removed and their holes filled before it was coated.

Thanks, Dinny

I have two as well. (Just sold one to olsoldja) GREAT rifles, with a very handi barrel length!

The one I have left is a 454. It shoots 45 Colts just fine and I feel safer because my heavy 45 colt loads are now loaded in 454 brass so there is no more dangers of them finding thre way into a expensive model P colt revolver.

Good luck with yours!!

Merry Christmas to all!

I love mine, but I 'm guilty of heresy.  I've gotta have a scope, and the straight stock just wouldn't work for me.  I bought a checkered walnut MC pistol grip with recoil pad that matches the forearm perfectly,  and now I'm a happy camper.  I did the same with my .38-55 and my .32-20....straight grip to MC.  So far, I've let it stay a .45.  I have .445SM and .357 Maxi Handis and really don't see a need to go to .454 or .460.  Mine too is a shooter.  If it wasn't, it'd either get fixed or gone ;)   I left the barrel at the factory 20 inches until now, but there is a real possibiliity  it may get bobbed to 16.5 or 18 along with the 22 inch .445.  I'm of the mindset that pistol calibers were designed around short barrels....considerably shorter even than 16.5 inches.

I agree 100% Peter! I have said the same for many years, shorties are great BUT stick to shotgun or pistol calibers!!
I al also a Marlin lever lover, I have a couple 16" Marlins that haven't been outta the safe in more than ten years!! I took a 30-30 on a hunt about 5-6 years. It rung my bell so badly, considering my migraine since my explosion. I ain't gonna be shooting any of them any time soon!! ::)

Pistol caliber shorties are where it's at as far as I'm conserned!!! :)

Well, I just received the GBO 454 reamer in the mail today!!!  I have a friend that's a machinist that's gonna make sure I don't booger it up:)  I am looking forward to pulling the trigger on it!  I tend to agree that the shorty's should be pistol calibers...I know the 358 I have is excellent in the contender and even more-so in the handi shorty.  I'm probably gonna stick to the lighter side of bullets in the 454, If I want heavier I'll just shoot the 45-70!  What are some good options when it comes to the lighter jacketed bullets?  I know the XTP's are popular, but I was also eyeing the Deepcurl Speer bullets and possibly the Nosler hunting bullets.

I have one.  i like it.  The chamber is oversize.  Brass expands.  Sometimes it catches on the extractor.  i live with it.  The chamber is long.  i can almost fit a 454 but not quite.  i use starline 454 brass trimmed to 1.34 or 450 Extreme length as specd in the 2009 Hodgdon annual.  it works pretty good.  The throat is short.  if use 45 colt brass no problem. if use my brass mentioned I have to seat heavy bullets deep. Using a 200 ftx I can seat to the cannelure.  i shoot surplus H110 from www.gibrass.com  32 grains gets me about 2500 fps which is 308 performance from a 450 case and short rifle with br4 primers. I do not crimp but I wonder if it would tighten up groups based on revolver experience.  I get 1.5 inch 3 shot groups at 100 a couple inches high at 100 and twice the size and a few inches low at 200.  i have a 2.5 X scope.  i added a magnum kick eze pad.  believe it or not the pad seemed to help the groups.  it recoils straight back now rather than slightly up or down based on the curve of the plate.   I sanded the forearm very little. have added a 45-70 32 inch.
