Ruger No. 1 - stock conversion??
« on: August 18, 2012, 05:12:12 AM »
All,
have a standard .270 no. 1 that was my father's - nice gun, hardly shot... I really like the looks & style of the International / Mannlicher (sp?) stocks on these guns, so the question is can I economically convert this standard stock configuration to an International stocked rifle? It would mean removing the barrel-attached sling mount. Anyone done this/recommendations on aftermarket stock-makers for these rifles?
As always - thanks for any information!

Except for it being your dad's, it would probably be cheaper to sell it and buy an international.
If you haven't seen an international in person, they are really short, and the full length stock makes them look even shorter.
(That said, I intend to keep my international forever.)
The most logical thing in my mind is to have two #1's, at least until you decide you need a varmint model.
The difference between people who do stuff and people who don't do stuff is that the people who do stuff do stuff.

Yes, a Ruger 1V is a necessary part of LIFE! I'm beginning to think an RSI is too, the only thing holding me back is poverty.

I just sent my #1 off to have the conversion completed by a gunsmith.

Your problem will be finding the forearm.  They are few and far between.  I picked one up from gunpartscorp for $127 about two years ago.  I was also able to purchase all of the parts from them to do the conversion.  There are quite a few unique pieces.   Between the forearm and the parts I probably have spent $300.    I purchased a like new 30 06 barrel on gunbroker for $75.

I had a .243 barrel on my rifle.  The gunsmith who is doing the conversion will slightly re profile the barrel, cut and crown it, add all of the pieces then reblue every thing.  Probably another $300.  So you see I am just shy of an RSI by a couple hundred dollars.

I had purchased my #1 as a barreled action years ago.  When I had the barrel reamed to .243 AI the place that did it got it wrong.  The barrel was slightly tilted.  I did shoot an antelope with it but you would have to account for the tilt.  So I was in a spot where I really needed to re barrel anyway.

So all in all probably not the best idea in all honesty.
