Anyone using a knob on the forend instead of the screw?
« on: December 06, 2012, 06:36:33 AM »
I was thinking a "takedown knob" instead of the screw would be nice if you wanted to swap/remove barrels without tools.
Something like this http://www.swmanufacturing.com/part_photo.asp?pid=SKS-013&PROD_ID=195&TYP_ID=18
I'll play around with it a little bit.
I have more guns than I need, but not as many as I want.

A similar one is in the FAQs, this was discussed recently.

I prefer the screw as I can use a small torque wrench to ensure it's tightened the same each time.  My fore end is glass bedded, though.  Maybe this matters less with the o-ring method.
Lead me not into temptation but point me to it instead.

Some of the guys are using a FAT wrench.  No, not the weight type FAT! ;)

I use the knobs in the link below... I also buy a 1/4 X 20 steel threaded rod locally and custom cut each threaded stem to length for that particular gun, different lengths are required due to different forearm thicknesses.

That's similar to the one from the FAQs that's been there for many years, it was posted on RFC originally when I participated there regularly.  ;D

I dont care for a knob hanging under there to catch my hand, or anything else, and a screw has never been a problem for me. My keychain has a couple of 'screw tools' on it as does my SAK and a multi-tool in my kits.

my oldies have a slot
as opposed to a phillips,
and i almost always have a
dime or penny.

the newer ones i have that
have phillips are not not a
particular problem to remove,
and i don't foresee a scenario
that i'll be in where i'll have
to remove my barrel in a big hurry.

i guess it would be an option if
you were so inclined.

I use this, but only on my shorty maxi.  To be honest, I have never had the need to use it.  No, it's not in the way, but I wouldn't put it on a heavy kicker.

The rounds in the cartridge holder are loaded with the 180 gr. SSP.

The 3 Handis I have all have 1/4-28 screws, not 1/4-20.

I believe the older Handis were 1/4-28.  The newer ones are all 1/4-20.

Pete would be correct, modern H&R/NEFs are ¼"-20, vintage pre-87 H&R Inc barrels were ¼"-28, I've got a whole room full of modern ¼"-20 studded barrels and one model 158 30-30 barrel that's ¼"-28.  ;) ......and a model 1908 that's neither, it has a snap-on forend!  ;D
