Question About Swapping Bbls.
« on: December 06, 2012, 10:20:06 AM »
Hey Guys
I'm new to GBO  but have been doing some reading but still wondering about swapping bbls. If I buy a bbl does it still need to be sent in to be fitted to my frame and have headspacing checked?
Another question, how hard will it be to get a Handi in 257 Roberts?
Thanks
Mike

Read the faqs about barrel fitting. Most people don't have any trouble fitting them themselves. And for the 257 bob, good luck. I would sell all my handies to have one...

Welcome! If you buy a second hand barrel, it needs to fit properly, see "Will second hand barrels fit?" and the barrel fitting info in the FAQs sticky for info. The only way to get a 257 Roberts is a stub(FAQs) or rebore and rechamber of a smaller chambered barrel like Hornet or 223.

Fred's 257R is an Ultra, way beyond a Handi!  ;)

Wow! Fred's 257Roberts is a real pretty gun, and she shoots!

My quandary, I personally, don't think I have enough Handi's but, I know I have more Handi's than I really need or should have.

Yes sir! That's what I want. Seems I need to meet Fred. And just because I'm a glutton for punishment, I'd like to have one to match in 256 Win Mag.
Thanks for the replies. I had looked through some of the FAQs and ran across the stubbing article but missed the bbl fitting.

Ive had 25-20, 25-35 and two 257 Bobs (though not in a H&R) so I can understand the attraction, but, have you considered getting the readily available 25-06 and loading it to Bob ballistics, or whatever level you want? You can have it NOW, and play with it, and maybe someday a Bob will come (+ you will get that sexy long barrel).

I don't pack my 25-06, I carry it on the snow machine till it's time to shoot.  Old men don't hike either.

I noticed when I changed barrels my point of impact changed, so I had to sight in the scope again.  I quite changing barrels, I put a barrel on a frame and leave it.  Got rid of all my extra barrels.  The only one left is the .50 cal muzzleloader barrel that fits the 45-70 frame.

A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

I hunt in road closure areas where no motorized vehicles are allowed or it's too brushy for any offroad vehicle, it's either hike in or not hunting at all.  :-\
