1987 H&R 12 gauge
« on: November 26, 2012, 09:46:03 AM »
What can I do with this as far as barrels?  What is the frame stock worth?  I have taken a barrel from a friend who had sent his handi rifle in and got a .308.  I shot it in my stock and it fit perfectly.  i only did it once and just wanted to see if it worked.  I see it is made for shotguns and maybe 17 or 22's.  Any other info you guys might like to divulge?
Thanks, Jer

If you shot a 308 on a shotgun frame you are lucky to be on here asking questions about it. You could have killed herself.

You might want to do a little reading in the FAQ section.

There are different types of frames. Not all of them are made for centerfire rifle rounds.

Consider me lucky then!  Wouldn't do it a second time though.  Can you only get 22's and muzzleloaders on he old shotgun frames?
Thanks, Jer

I think most of the shotguns come on what the call a SB1 frame. Centerfire rifles on a SB2 frame. H&R will fit 357 mag and 44 mag barrels to a SB1, but none of the higher pressure rounds as they'll eventually probably blow up in your face. There's some guys on here who know than me and they'll probably pop in shortly.

H&R won't fit Rifle barrels other than 357mag and 44 mag on a shotgun frame since the shotgun frame is not heat treated to handle the pressure.

Read quite a little bit before I posted. I get the gist of it.

Just a little constructive criticism.  Have you heard of, less is more?  The different colors and multiple sizes of fonts is hard to sort through.  There is no way to tell what is important to know and what is not.  My question is really, what would be the guess of a shotgun of that age?  Is it definitely a SB1?  It may be as simple as, "your gun will shoot shotgun barrels or a 45 long colt.  Nothing else"

That is kind of what I thought, pop.
Thanks, Jer

Welcome Pop!  ;) Basically any H&R Inc(out of business in 1986) firearm made prior to 1987 is on a cast iron frame made for shotgun and low pressure rifle chamberings, in 1987 NEF (see H&R Timeline sticky in H&R Misc forum or FAQ) started production of alloy steel framed rifles(SB2 rifle frames) and cast iron framed shotguns(SB1 shotgun frames). Currently H&R1871 will fit all shotgun barrels (except 10ga based barrels) as well as 357mag and 44mag to those SB1 frames made 1987 and later, they won't fit any barrels to any frame made prior to 1987, nor will they fit any high pressure chambering to any SB2 frame made prior to 2000. This is pretty well explained on the H&R website. SB1 frames are ductile cast iron similar to those cast iron frames made prior 1987, SB2 frames are heat treated alloy steel. Rimfire frames(SS1) are cast iron and only work with rimfire barrels, SB1 and SB2 frames won't work with rimfire barrels(except the long discontinued Versa Pac barrels) due to the firing pin location.
