PA College Slashes Instructors' Hours to Avoid Obamacare    Pennsylvania's Community College of Allegheny County (CCAC) is slashing the hours of 400 adjunct instructors, support staff, and part-time instructors to dodge paying for Obamacare.

"It's kind of a double whammy for us because we are facing a legal requirement [under the new law] to get health care and if the college is reducing our hours, we don't have the money to pay for it," said adjunct biology professor Adam Davis.

On Tuesday, CCAC employees were notified that Obamacare defines full-time employees as those working 30 hours or more per week and that on Dec. 31 temporary part-time employees will be cut back to 25 hours. The move will save an estimated $6 million.

"While it is of course the college’s preference to provide coverage to these positions, there simply are not funds available to do so," said CCAC spokesperson David Hoovler. "Several years of cuts or largely flat funding from our government supporters have led to significant cost reductions by CCAC, leaving little room to trim the college’s budget further."

The solution, says United Steelworkers representative Jeff Cech, is that adjunct professors should unionize in an attempt to thwart schools seeking similar cost-savings efforts from avoiding Obamacare.

"They may be complying with the letter of the law, but the letter of law and the spirit of the law are two different things," said Mr. Cech. "If they are doing it at CCAC, it can't be long before they do it other places."

Under the new CCAC policy, adjunct professors will only be allowed to teach 10 credit hours a semester. Adjuncts are paid $730 per credit hour.

"We all know we are expendable," said Mr. Davis, "and there are plenty of people out there in this economy who would be willing to have our jobs."

I find this to be rather funny. College instructors who probably engage in liberal indoctrination every chance they get while teaching a class are now being harmed by the very ideology that they attempt to brainwash others into believing. Tough shitsky commarades. You now may reap what ye have sown.

Maybe some of these "wise" instructors are about to learn some "common " sense,, and see how the REAL world works!

This is happening everywhere right now, and the staffing agency's are rakeing it in. They pay thier people anywhere from minimum wage to nine bucks an hour and charge company's seventy bucks
an hour for that person. They have no benifits, no paid vacations or holidays.
So when you hit a four day week end like we just did, these people are broke or can't afford to even buy food. They fall behind and lose everything. I know two hundred bucks doesn't sound like much.
But if it is all you have clear each month after paying ridiculous amounts for rent, it could mean everything for you. Some of these people have to save up three weeks worth of pay checks just to make one months rent. Staffing needs to come under some sort of guidelines, its almost like slave labor in a lot of cases. Now we have Obamacare hitting them or the IRS comes after them for money
they don't have. They are not on drugs, staffing agency's drug test regularly. Some of these people have high tech degrees but can't find a job now. Its far more worse out there than we are being told.
We are becomeing a nation of poorly paid sub contractors and it has all showed up on Obamas watch.

And you can't force companies to do anything....unless you advocate communism.

It's a thing of self regulation and being fair, you can't put lipstick on a pig and expect to get anything but a pig. But Ben, things like this were not as bad until Obama came around.
Wages in this country are taking a reversal, while everything else is going up. Setting the stage for
communisum, people just do not know what they are getting themselves into .

It sounds to me like we are living in a time of severe "haves" and "have nots."  I predicted this, many years ago.  All of the ingredients have been building for a long time.  The primary causal constituent in this--in my opinion--has been the massive influx of illegal invaders.  I don't know about all areas of the country, but what I see around here is Latinos doing nearly all of the manual labor jobs like roofing, framing, tree planting, waitressing, housekeeping and such.  I don't know how many are legal, but I"m pretty sure that when they have the accent and talk to each other in jibber jabber lingo, they probably have illegal roots.
One can't really fault these folks for being willing to take the jobs and do the work, but the point is that they have displaced a whole heck of a lot of non-immigrant American workers.  Keeping it real, we also must acknowledge that all too many of our American yutes have issues.  I think a very high percentage of them don't want to really work and, or they are on drugs.
My daughter owns a service based business and it is unbelievable how hard it is for her to hire good help.  So far, all of her employees have been--for lack of a better term--original Americans (not to be confused with native American).  Almost all of them last for a very short time and she has to let them go for stealing, or showing up for work under some kind of substance influence, or not showing up for work at all.
Of course, there is the other factor in all of this and that is the off-shoring of so many production jobs.  The net result is a surplus labor force and with a government that is doing everything possible to discourage employers and projects that could actually produce lots of jobs, we're stuck until our politicians, or the voters wake up.  From the latest election results it looks like that isn't imminent.

We have ween wages stagnate for years because of the low wage immigrants.  The powers at large should never have ditched the farm worker programs that let them come and go legally.  Now they have stayed and have had kids born, so these are citizens.  They do not assimilate bcause they have their own community.

There has been   "conspiracy" ever since I started working to eliminate the middle class, to push wages down, and executive pay higher.  We will end up with a 2nd or 3rd world situation where the few rich live behind walls with guards, and the rest of us have to wait for crumbs.

When you've got 4 families of immigrants living in one rental, and buying a junky old van and used refrig., they are not adding much to the economy.  When the go to the ER for free, we all lose.

Much needs to be done about illegal immigration, including making sure they get at least minimum wage, and pay appropriate tax's.  They should also have a stake in their own medical care.

If I go to the ER, I have to pay whether my Ins. does or not.
