.223 and FTF
« on: November 14, 2012, 07:38:18 AM »
bought a used .223 barrel and it locked up nicely on my .45-70 handi. took it to the range sunday. lots of FTF with american eagle brand grey tip ammo. going to try another brand. this barrel is an extractor when a round is placed into the chamber it drops in past the extractor. when i close the action and open it ejects fine. is this normal? firing pin hits off center and looks a little light. i have never had a ftf with this frame with the 45-70 or the 357 max. will read the FAQs again. really want to get this one to work it has iron sights.

Is this .223 ammo, OR were you trying to shoot 5.56? ???   I ask because I did that once and had the same result.  5.56 will not fire in my rifles ............ but they sure love a steady diet of .223 8)

Did you fit it?

I'm thinking you have a bit too much space at the breech...

Also, do you have a extra power spring installed? I know it was fine with other calibers, thats why I think it may not be fit properly.

cw i would think the same, but this one fits more solid than the factory 45-70 barrel. is it possible to be too tight?

doc, i will try the winchesters. i will reload for this one if i can get it to function properly.

what's up with the round dropping in so deep past the ejector? normal? my other barrels are extractor.

In saying it drops past the ejector do you mean that the base of the cartridge goes past level with the face of the barrel??

I have only seen my extractor which fits flush with the face of the barrel so if my cartridge were to go past the extractor it would indicate that my chamber was either cut way to deep with a very NoGo head space problem or was not actually cut for the round I thought it was.

My ejector .223 allows the cartridge to drop fully into the chamber - past the ejector.  The ejector rides easily over the rim when I close the action.  The best I can tell, it was designed to work that way as I get no perceptible resistance when I close the action.

Are you absolutely certain that you are following through on the trigger pull and not letting go or relaxing when the hammer falls?  It's easy to do without realizing it and easy to correct once you've become conscious of it.  I have caught myself doing little things like that if I haven't shot in a while.

The issue is as you say, its perfectly fine with two other barrels. That leaves only two possibilities.... Ammo or barrel.

Try Docs suggestion, It is quite possible that the primers in the stuff you first shot where very hard.

Slam fires are a consideration in full auto AR/M firearms, so some DO HAVE hard primers. CCI makes a 223 spec primer for just this issue.

The ETX power springs I mentioned are made by Wolffe and something a number if us do "just because"
