Marlin .44 spitter
« on: November 07, 2012, 08:43:51 AM »
Is it normal to only get two accurate shots out of a Marlin .44 and then the rest to land all over who knows where at 100 yards until the barrel is left to cool out?  After returning to cold bore, it shoots the first two really well and begins to spit all over the place again.  I would say it is about a 1" group with the first two and then a 6" group for the next 5 or 6 shots.

I have had two of the 1894 44 Mags, both shot good groups. I have never had the problem mentioned. If the rifle is still under warranty, I would return it to Marlin for repair.

You've got too much tension on the forearm or mag tube is what it sounds like.  Barrel warms up and shots start moving.  My best shooting Marlins have a bit of movement in the forearm.  See if the mag tube touches the barrel anywhere.  Wander on over to www.marlinowners.com and read thru the gunsmithing section.  There are threads that will walk you thru what to check and how to set your marlin up to shoot more uniform groups.  Good luck!  DP

Marlin tends to rush assembly.  The forearm can be forced up into the barrel in order for the screws to align.  In addition, the forearm may be wedged into the cross piece that the screws lock into.  Either way, trim the forearm to fit and refinish the hidden wood so water cannot swell it.  Take off the magazine tube and remove the forearm to work on it.
