Colt SAA redone
« on: November 30, 2012, 08:06:35 AM »
Thought some of you would like to see what I did to a Commemorative Colt SAA.
I bought this second generation 125 Anniversary Colt about 16 years ago. It sat in a guns shop because nobody wanted a commemorative that had been shot a little but handled a lot.
In some places the gold plating was worn down to the base metal. Never liked the looks of it put paid $400 for it and stuck it in my safe, hey, it is a Colt SAA after all.
Last couple of years I began to think about what I could do with it. I came across some info. about Doug Turnbull and contacted him about my idea to turn this SAA into what a Second Generation SAA should really look like.
This spring I sent him the gun and got it back about 4 months later. It came back as a new gun, inside and out. Even what I paid him along with my purchase price I could not buy a new SAA or even another second generation SAA in similar condition.
It's so nice I even hate to think about shooting it, but that's what they were made for, right ?
Heres a  picture of what I sent him:

Here is what I got back, this is what a Second Generation Colt SAA should look like
color case hardened receiver and charcoal blue. I did keep the original wood grips.

Very nice job, thanks for sharing..  I live about an hour's drive from the Turnbull shop and out of curiosity I stopped to see what was inside.  I have two old Winchesters that have been in the family for years and was thinking of trading one in to offset the part of the cost to restore the other.  Their show room is like a museum of fine firearms and although I was not in a buying position I was treated in a very pleasant and welcome fashion by the staff.  Doug Turnbull does excellent work and treats you very well if you stop at their shop.

You made a so-so commemorative into a 'real' Colt's, well done!
By all means shoot and enjoy it. I can sense you take care of your stuff so you wont be devaluing it, and hey, it IS yours. Kinda nice you saved it for so long to do this  ;D .

Your Colt is a beautiful piece! Turnbull has case hardening down to a fine art. Did he do any action work, etc.? Enjoy it and DO SHOOT it! I am thinking about sending my Winchester High Wall to have him work his magic on it.

He did, I also had him polish the cyliner stop (?) so it would not drag on the cylinder and leave the tell tale scratch. I feel it's new both inside and out.
Next up is a 1958 Winchester Model 64 that is in nice shape except the left side of the receiver has some light pitting. Undecided if I want them to just reblue or color case harden the receiver. I  would also like the stock refinished and checkered like the delux model.

For just plain lust after looks its hard to beat the case colors; every one of the Turnbull's Ive seen has marvelous colors too. Go for it!
