To bob or not to bob?
« on: November 03, 2012, 06:04:40 PM »
How close is to close for the hammer and or spur to the scope? Put a 4x12x50 VXR Leupold on my SS Ultra and it is not touching, but it about 1/32 on the spur and 1/8 inch on the top of the hammer. If  i bob the hammer i might get another 3/16. Thanks gunny

On my Weaver V16 It had a small clearance, might have been 1/32, but after firing it did make contact and chip the paint on the eyepiece.  I installed the hammer extension and made a mark and then lopped it off at that point.

Sounds to me like plenty of room! I have bobed a few, but most of the time with a Leupy, its not necessary. (Just the tip above the spurr.) Here is some pics... ::)

Thank you for your input and all the great pictures. I think a little shaping on the spur and the tip of the hammer and some cold blue will take care of it. Thanks again gunny

I've done it several times to use low rings with a particular scope.  Not a problem.  You can also install the spur with the opening up and file the lower part so it slides down more on the hammer and bob even more off.  On one I even had to round off the top corners of the spur to get the final clearance.  Works for me, though the spur is always on the left side.

Also have a couple that work fine with untouched hammer because of scope type and placement.
Think as if you LIFE depends on it... IT does..!  Be Well...
