You could do it cheaper with a M923 (5 ton) and a custom box to fit the bed.  $8000-9000 for the truck and the same for the box.  Mileage would still be 6-8 mpg.  You could do it with a deuce and be able to slide the box off.  Your mileage would be 8-11 mpg.  I have thought on this before.  But they are big targets.  A jeep with an expedition style trailer would be easier and not draw the same attention as one of these, same as a truck with a camper shell or cap.  Gas supplies would be the pinch point on this.  I admit 1600 miles is nice but by the time you got there you would be stuck, unless your cache area had reserves that had not been touched.
