Scat ID Help
« on: October 28, 2012, 09:10:23 AM »
Below is a picture from behind our home. It's on a large rock on the river bank. It is the size of what our 100 pound black lab deposits in the yard. We have lots of coyotes, but this just seemed really large for a coyote. Any thoughts? Thanks, Brett

Pure guess: small bear (I don't know where you live). The presence of plant material (berry seeds, leaf remnants and/or grass) suggests at least an omniviore like a human or bear. Coyotes and wolves will also eat berries in season as will raccoons but the size makes me think big canine, human or bear.

Looks like a mega-sized raccoon pile, which makes me wanna say small bear, too.  Coyote droppings are much smaller and usually have a little fur in them this time of year.

Coyote scat here is still predominantly grasshoppers, just starting to see fur in it.

I'm going with hellgate, I see the berry seeds and large grass ball (laxitive). Plus if is ontop of a large rock it has to have some size to it. Just want to ask, did you notice any Charmin tissue near by???? if not it leaves out that family of bears on the commerical.
