THe Brits say global warming stopped 16 years ago.

The Daily Mail is reporting that the Met Office, the qauisi-government weather forecasting agency in Great Britain, quietly issued a new study that shows “no discernible rise in aggregate global temperatures” for the last 16 years.
 
 Quote The figures, which have triggered debate among climate scientists, reveal that from the beginning of 1997 until August 2012, there was no discernible rise in aggregate global temperatures.
 
This means that the ‘plateau’ or ‘pause’ in global warming has now lasted for about the same time as the previous period when temperatures rose, 1980 to 1996. Before that, temperatures had been stable or declining for about 40 years.

The new data, compiled from more than 3,000 measuring points on land and sea, was issued quietly on the internet, without any media fanfare, and, until today, it has not been reported.
 
This stands in sharp contrast to the release of the previous figures six months ago, which went only to the end of 2010 – a very warm year.
 
Ending the data then means it is possible to show a slight warming trend since 1997, but 2011 and the first eight months of 2012 were much cooler, and thus this trend is erased.
 
Some climate scientists, such as Professor Phil Jones, director of the Climatic Research Unit at the University of East Anglia, last week dismissed the significance of the plateau, saying that 15 or 16 years is too short a period from which to draw conclusions.
 
Others disagreed. Professor Judith Curry, who is the head of the climate science department at America’s prestigious Georgia Tech university, told The Mail on Sunday that it was clear that the computer models used to predict future warming were ‘deeply flawed’.
 
Even Prof Jones admitted that he and his colleagues did not understand the impact of ‘natural variability’ – factors such as long-term ocean temperature cycles and changes in the output of the sun. However, he said he was still convinced that the current decade would end up significantly warmer than the previous two.
Is anyone surprised that the media forgot to cover this story? Absolutely remarkable that the Met Office would release this report the way they did. If it showed an increase in temperature, you can bet it would have been banner headlines from one end of the western world to the other.
 
Meanwhile, back in cloud cuckoo land, California is ready to implement its statewide cap and trade scheme, guaranteed to destroy what’s left of its economy.

it has been trending toward warmer for 10,000 years.  otherwise we would still be in the ice age.
now who can we blame it on before we had greenhouse gasses??

Of course you'll be won't be able to show where the temperatures have changed as rapidly as they have since the burning of fossil fuels, but that's a minor point to the skeptics.
 
Checked the Met site for this earth shaking study but couldn't find it. Does it really exist, or is this another trumped up claim based on incorrect analysis of data?
 
Check the site yourselves. You'll find it's position on climate chang quite different than this thread would have you believe!

The name just needs to keep changing: It was global warming and that was debunked. Then there was climate change but it became increasingly implausible in light of things like relatively small ice sheets in the arctic (which got reported) and massive increases in antarctic ice (which wasn't reported nearly as much). Then there was some waffling about how these changes need to be evaluated regionally.
 
The phrase now is "reduce carbon footprint", which seems to have some staying power because it is more to the point: Somebody wants to make money off of the carbon products that you use, and they will tax you to get it. Follow the money long enough and you will find where it's going.

If you ever look at the saw-toothed graphs that represent the temperatures of the previous ice ages, there's a pretty good chance that future historians will look back and say that the next ice age began somewhere within the next couple of centuries.  We are just about at the peak of previous interim temperatures and the cycle length also matches pretty closely.

However, who knows if history will repeat itself yet again?

It is true.   Global warming eco-babble was proven to be wrong by many climatologists, and a geologist, before the news reports indicated the original data was fraudulent.   Like I always said, the three most important letters in the word liberal are L-I-E.

 It doesn't matter what any data to the contrary might show. People who've committed themselves to the idea of man-made climate change (or whatever the term of the day is) are not going to be deterred. If it cools off, they'll just whip out their sharpie and voila.... New signs to display!
