The base diameter of the wad is important if you are muzzleloading. For a cartridge load the import OD is measured around the petals with the bullet inserted. Too small it will let the bullet fall out of the cartridge and too big and you can't chamber it. I am think the 410 wad is probably too big for the 38-55 but I have never tried it. I have used 410 wads for sabots in a 444M and 410 shotgun. The initial results weren't so good but I didn't put any real time into working on a load.
