High guys,
 
   I have been reviewing these two revolvers online, but it is hard to get a sense of how large they are.   Is the High Standard 109 generally similar in size to a S&W J frame, and the H&R 999 more similar to a S&W K frame?  (The H&R in particular looks pretty danged big for a .22).

I've owned (own) all three revolvers mentioned.  The S&W J frame (Model 34) is the smallest and is all blue/steel.  The HiStd 109 (Sentinel?) is next in size and is aluminum framed.  The H&R 999 is the largest and heaviest (all steel).  This revolver was at one time considered a target revolver.  By far the best of the three is the S&W J frame, models 34,35,63, etc. than the H&R 999.  Hope this helps.

    For a plinking gun, though, those J Frame Smiths are slow to reload and only hold 6 shots.  Woudn't the H&R 999 be a better plinker?

Manny,
I agree, wholeheartedly.  There are HKS 9 shot speed loaders available for the SPORTSMAN - break the action - pop out 9 spent shells automatically and simultaneously and then speed load 9 more.  I take a 1933 SPORTSMAN to the range everytime I go.  Doesn't matter if to the handgun or the rifle range.  I've shot mine at 50 yards bench rested, beter than some of the guys can do with their .22 rifles.

The S&W "K" frame and the COLT Police Positive revolvers with the swing out cylinders are much bigger.  These were target and practice revolvers for the 38's.

Concerning speed of reloading, Each round must be loaded into the speed loader or else the gun. Actually loading the gun saves a step. So in my mind is overall quicker...  ;)

My experience with several H.S. and H&Rs through the years is that the hand is rather thin and sharp and tends to wear the star. On a used gun pay particular attention to those parts and pass on any obviously worn.

I have owned several .22 revolvers and semi-autos over the years but my H&R 999 is the gun I always come back to for an afternoon of shooting.  Whether it's an informal bowling pin shoot, chasing squirrles, or critter control the 999 is the gun I take from the range bag and go with.  I have very few guns that I would not sell under any circumstances, as I tend to try different things at different times.  But my 999 will never leave.  It has been accurate and dependable and is my favorite .22 handgun of all I have ever owned.  My only regret is that I do not have another one!  44 Man

I once shot a flying pigeon out of the sky with a 999 of a room mates. All the guys put there guns away for the day ha ha. Mtn Jack. I will find one someday and buy it a great rimfire.
