Squirrel hunting, permit needed?
« on: October 26, 2012, 01:20:20 PM »
Hello all,

I would like to hunt squirrel on a friend's private property using an airgun.  Do I need a permit to do this?  This is in Illinois, btw.  Some airguns in Illinois are considered firearms, mine is not.

Thanks!

???  what a convoluted mess ::)  I spent 20 minutes on the DNR website for Illinois looking for an answer for you.  Call your game warden, I'm betting even he can't tell you one way or another.

I don't know about IL but here in WV it doesn't matter what weapon you use, it matters that a squirrel is a game animal. So I would think yes, permit needed.

Here in Texas we have a squirrel season... Never seen a permit. I know that in most states you can cull "nuisance" pests. Squirrels are just rats with fuzzy tails, they tear up houses, kill trees, spread disease and fleas. I have never met a nut-bearing tree owner that didn't kill as many as possible. I would think your best bet would be to call your LOCAL game warden or parks & wildlife agency and ask what the law for nuisance pest control requires. I don't think it makes a difference if you use a BB or a Barrett, its still "taking game".

Just my opinion from a thousand miles away. Use appropriate measures of salt.
