50/140 scope base
« on: September 08, 2012, 06:40:25 AM »
I noticed on my 500 S&W that the standard Handi base looked a little battered after a few sessions with full house loads.  This got me thinking about mounting a scope on my 50-140.   :-\
Due to old, damaged eyes I'll be using a scope for hunting with that rifle.  while the intended load will be pretty mild: 450 gr @ 18-1900 fps, how well do y'all think the mounting system will hold up?   ???   Beefier mounting screws maybe?  steel bases?

I went with the Iron Sighter base with a Leupold 1-4x20 Vari-XIIc in Burris Zee rings on my 50-140, I removed the scope to check ring & base condition,  seems to work fine with 570gr at well over 2000fps.....so far!  ;) One of the Warne bases would be perfect, I have the steel Tactical base on the 499HE with Leupold PRW rings on a Nikon 2-7x32 Prostaff shotgun scope, works fine also.

I haven't made my mind up on that yet.
I want to keep it with open sights but I too have older eyes.
If I do scope it I think it would be with one of the brass tube scopes.
Would still look vintage.

My bullets arrived today.
Hawk 350gr JSP at .510 diameter.
The company says they are of softer jacket design and should bump up to make a nice tight seal in the bore.
Just waiting on my RCBS #31 shell holder to arrive and I will be ready to start the fun.
Going to pick up some powder tomorrow for it.
Won't be long now, I hope!!!

I have had some issues with mounting screws with Contenders but not with handis... Mostly cause the Contenders are handguns and move more under recoil than out H&R rifles.
BUT, if you wanting bullet proof.... I agree upping to #8 screw (say a 8/40) and a steel base, would go a long way to a more durable mount.

Also staying with a lighter scope will help too.

The recoil impulse fo a 50-140 is alot different then even your 500 S&W. Not talking pressures or total recoil, I am talking recoil pulse or how sharp the recoil is. The higher the pressure the likelyness of a higher recoil pulse is. The higher the pulse the more wear and tear on things like scopes and sights is.

In a Contender, I sheard off the 4, #6 factory screws with a 357 Herrett. I replaced them with #8/40's and had them shoot loose twice before remounting and epoxing the base to the barrel with new screws fixed the problems!!  ::)

Good luck,

I went with the Iron Sighter base ... in Burris Zee rings...

I like that Ironsighter base.  And the only rings I've bought since you introduced me to them have been the Signature Zee's!  I'm glad to know they are good options and that they are holding up!  ;)

I added one of those to my wish list also!   :o  Like you said, they sound perfect!   ;D  Do you think the rings will fit the recesses tightly?   ???

I really like the looks of those also!

When I started looking I was supprised how many .510 Dia. bullets there are out there!  But I bought a mould from the classifieds for a 450 gr. FN I'm gonna play with for a while.

Sure would be nice if I could find a steel quarter rib that would fit the Handi barrel..  ::)

Have you compared what's on a Ruger #1?

If it would work, you would also get a base in the deal! Of coarse you would need to use Ruger rings, but they are very good so no issues there!

The Ruger quarter rib was exactly what I was thinking!  With that you get a solid ramp, the scope base and an open sight!   ;D   'course I could always just get a block of steel and practice my metal working skills...  :-\

I don't think I've ever had Weaver style rings fit "perfect" as in not allow any fore and after movement of the ring when placed on the base loosely, but I always seat the ring and snug the clamping screw up so it just allows the ring slight movement so the clamp is centered on the sides of the base as best it can be, then push the ring forward then tighten the clamp, then it can't move under recoil. I think you'd have to use a picatinny ring on a picatinny base to see that, so I dunno, it's something I've never used, just the picatinny base with Weaver style rings.

Well DUH!   :P   A simple, effective and obvious solution!   ::)   Sometimes I worry about myself...  :-[   Thanks Tim!  Another concern eliminated!   ;D
