Replacing spring on Contender to lighten trigger pull
« on: August 29, 2012, 01:36:49 AM »
Hi guys.  Which spring do I replace?  Can you tell me by the part number in the photo?  How difficult is this to do and is it worth it.  I hear you can use a bic lighter spring.

Thank you,

best i can tell there it is 43-0. it was extremely easy, very well worth it, and a bic lighter spring works. done it to 2 er 3 of my old model frames. i've had a couple that did not really need it though. just adjusting external screws took care of my need.

Help an old newby.  I am not new to Contenders at all, but have not done any work on them such as talked about here.
I am not familiar with the Bic spring, does it have to be cut to fit in the Contender frame?  What are the external screws that are adjustable?
Thanks for any help and light that you can shed on the trigger of a otherwise remarkable tool.

I pick up every Bic lighter I see laying around. I have even turned around with the car if traffic isn't too bad to pick them up off the street. They are the perfect spring for nice triggers.

You cut the spring from a bic mine lighter, Bellm sells hardened ball baring,s. You cut the spring shorter than the stock one  under the trigger seer is a cup over the stock spring set up, the ball baring lets the seer release smother and the spring makes it lighter. The set screws on the top of the trigger and back of the guard are for trigger travel let off and stop.

Aren't those steel balls the same size as a BB?  .177?  Thought I heard that somewhere.  Dremel tool or good side-cutters works good to cut coils off the spring.  I cut 1/4 coil at a time and check adjustment.  I have a couple I need to re-do.  Overtravel adjustment also important if shooting for groups or minute of eyeball.
