Need help deciding which action to keep?
« on: January 05, 2013, 06:26:55 PM »
OK, I got bit by the double rifle bug a couple of years ago and bought my first Valmet 412 in 9.3x74R. Added a 12 ga and 20 ga barrel. My stock had been modified and I always wanted a factory one so found a good deal on another 412 and traded for it. Now I have a delima. My original action was a blue standard 412. The new action is a 412 ST with the silver finish. IT is in good condition but there is some wear on the side.

So would like to ask which action should I keep. My blue 412 is in great shape. The 9.3 barrels are already fitted to it so don't have to worry about that. My problem is I like the silver finish, not sure if it is more corrosion resistant but think so. Of course the fact that it is wearing some may negate that. I have been told the ST's have better triggers, can someone confirm this?

My plan is to take which ever action I don't keep, match it with my old stock, put a set of 28" 3" magnum 28" long barrels on it and sell it. So someone please help me decide which to keep.

I would really like to hear what drilling man thinks about the different actions if he reads this.

Thanks for the help.

I believe DM will tell you to keep them both.  ;D after all you have 3 barrel sets so the way I see it your short 2 actions.  :D

Do the math and see if I'm right.

Do not know of any difference between the 412 and 412s, there is an internet myth that the 412S is better but I dont see it based on opening the guns up.  Which leads me to believe there is no difference between the 412 actions.

My personal belief is that the ST designation is for trap.  I dont know what the S means.

Doug you may be right about the trapped designation. This one came with a single barrel with screw in chokes and a raises rib.  I read somewhere that the S actions has smaller firing pins and a mechanism to prevent doubling. That would be helpful with the heavier kicking Rifle cartridges.

Postorp if I could afford to keep both I would. I would really like to find a set of 12 gauge barrels with screw in chokes.

Yes Bill, finding another barrel set will solve all your problems.....  ;) boy you got the bug bad. If you really can't afford that second action you better look for another job to finance your new addiction.  ;)

As far as what "I" was told by ----------> Valmet, the difference between the 412's and then the "S" model was, the "S" model has a slight difference in how the fireing pins work, "rebounding" is what i remember.  I think that's all the real difference is between them, besides the difference in the wood and finish.

The triggers are the same single trigger with the same double trigger option...

I'd keep what ever one you like better...

The ST was the trap model, it had a higher comb/different fore end, a different safety design and "trap" bbls...

Thanks for the replies guys. I'm going to try to keep it but may not be able to swing it. The dang post office dropped the single barrel in shipment and the rib broke loose in several places. Hoping they will cover the repair cost. Know anybody who is good at silver soldering. Of course that will require rebluing so any collector's value will be gone. Only single barrel I ever saw.

DM, by the way I finally got to see how to drill the hole to disable the auto safety. I hate to mess with my gun but if you ever come across an extra one I could buy I would like to try it. I also need a cocked chamber indicator. The trap gun is missing the lower barrel one. I was afraid it might only be a single shot but the firing pin and everything else is in place so just need the indicator.
