The correct answer is Marlin.  Maybe Stevens or Axis close 2nd.

Wait... let me modify that.. the correct answer WAS Marlin - before they moved operations to Ilion, NY... now their QC (courtesy of Remington) is sh*t.... so all bets are off.  So dunno; but mostly likely Stevens or Axis.

This is what baffles me... It's not hard to keep the bad ones of the street. Hire a few guys that really like the brand... and tell them to reject anything that stinks. Then... go back to your build process and remove whatever led to the suck in the first place. Or even grade them... 1st's, seconds, etc. if you really have to move product.

If anything is supposed to be about lasting quality, it's firearms.

If you're going to cut corners, do it in not critical places, you know... parkerize instead of blue.... less figured wood, and so one. But geezus, not at critical mechanical points of fit and operation.

I mean, these physical objects, with easily visible and measured parts. I just don't get it?

The tooling of today can make all these classic designs as good or better than they ever were.

Or maybe it's bean counters that don't get it. They can't possibly be firearms people. No typical firearms person would let this stuff happen.

  I agree with you FL;
  " Quality" is a matter of fit and function..and is it likely to be working as well 100 years from now?  As far as figured wood, mirror finish bluing, gold inlays and trigger etc..that's "window dressing" (IMO).   There is nothing wrong with window dressing if that is what you like, and usually the window dressing comes on better quality guns.
     To illustrate my point.. that 155 Howitzer used by an artillery unit..may look more snazzy and attract more attention (some unwanted ;) ) with lots of brass trim and racing stripes, but the same would work as well dressed in desert camo.

Scoot;
  The video was interesting and showed an efficient crew operating the 155.  I went to youtube to see if it was a unit my friend served with.  Did you happen to read any of the comments below the video?

 There was one which piqued my interest..don't know if it was genuine, perhaps an artilleryman in the forum can comment..here's the comment:

Please remove 'US Marines' from the video title. They are NOT US Marines. According to our Marine Corps Artillery Safety Standing Operating Procedures, the crew in this video continuously executed UNSAFE firing procedures. We (Marine Corps Cannoneer School at Fort Sill) received numerous complaints and concerns that our Marine Artillery Cannoneers have violated safety. Your assistance is much appreciated.

 One of the replies said they were Canadian cannoneers....

  Now back to "quality rifles"..
