Primitive Furniture, Don't mess wit da Zulu!

I post up some pictures when I get started on the bench.


I cut some Red Oak slabs this weekend 5 feet long and 18" wide and 3" thick to make a bench like Zulu shows in "Primitive Furniture".  They started out at 5" thick but I couldn't pick them up to load them in the truck.  I had to take them down to 3" and can barely handle them by myself now.  After the bench is built I'll have to get some help to move it.  Zulu must be built like The Hulk!

Yeah!  I'm a mean machine! :o :o
Actually, the stuff was pretty heavy.  But I still managed to do it by myself.  I started out with 8' long pieces and cut 2' off each side with a skill saw.  I had to cut one side, flip it and cut the other side, then clean the middle of the cut with a sawsall.  The 2' pieces became the legs.

Mine is not as woodsy looking as Zulu's.  I still have to make the pegs and sand it all down.  I think I will finish it with Spar varnish when I'm done.

In retrospect, I should have done something like that but I cut two larger rectangular holes that I could drop a wedge into and tap it in to tighten things up.  Maybe I'll have a chance to do a bit more work on it tomorrow.

Those in the picture have to be tapped in.  The round part fits the hole fine.  The head wedges against the leg just enough that it needs to be tapped in with a mallet.  Nothing moves at all when everything is installed..
