.41 Rem Mag Powder
« on: June 21, 2012, 05:59:30 PM »
I'm gathering supplies for my new to me .41 Blackhawk, 6 1/2" barrel.

Could you fella's steer me towards a powder that can work with cast lead? This is my first pistol round and first with lead as well. I guess <1000 FPS is a good place to start. A friend uses Unique, for some reason I think I would need to be very careful with it. Am I correct?

I use either 2400, W296, or H110 for full power stuff (.357, .41 mag, and .44 mag)  I only shoot cast loads in my pistols.  For starters try here for cast bullets: http://www.laser-cast.com/

For cast bullets , Unique would be my first choice , the only real issue is to be careful that you don't double charge a case as you use so little of it . Loads will range from as low as 8.0 grains to 12.5 grains depending on the bullet weight you are shooting .

I go through about 3 times more Unique than any other powder I use except maybe Trail Boss , which is also another good powder for light plunking loads .

I'm only using H110 in mine.  I shoot the CP 250gr WFNGC at 1260fps from my 6 1/2" BH  GL!

8 grs of unique with 210-220 gr cast swc bullets is a good everyday sort of load. Velocity out of my 4 5/8 in. blackhawk runs just under 1000 fps. Shoots very accurate and the recoil is mild.
When I want to spice things up a bit and run fullhouse loads I prefer 2400.

Must be the doubling that made me wonder. I have never used so little powder as to have a concern. Most cartrigdes are near full to the neck, and very simple to look see if something is amiss.

The H110 seems to have a wide following, is it a pretty easy measuring powder? Again I'm reletively new to all this but have found I really don't like the long stick type stuff.

H110 is a very easy flowing powder, but it is also a full powder charge only , and you'll be way beyond your 1000fps threshold.

H110 and W296 are said to be the same, but I cannot prove that one way or the other.  Both meter well for me, and are easy to work up loads with.  Starting loads are usually impressive.  One trick I have learned is to use standard primers instead of magnum primers.  Unless you are hunting or shooting in extreme cold magnum primers are just not needed.

You do have to be careful with 110/296 , without a tight enough crimp or proper primer, you will get squibbed and that might leave a bullet stuck between the cylinder and the forcing cone, or half way up the barrel..Neither one is a quick fix when it happens.
Lilgun worked well for accuracy in my gun, but fell way short of the ambitious velocity Hogdons claime at it's introduction.

I'll nix the 110. I tend toward forgiving setups in general. I sure don't want a kaboom from my own doings.

A pound of unique will last a heck of a long time at 12 grains per.

In my Redhawk, I use 7.5 gr. Universal w/215 gr plain base SWC from Leadheads for a mild plinking load and 17.5 gr 2400 with 210 gr. XTP for hunting. Not a real "stomper" by any means but the deer and hogs that have spent time in my freezer didn't seem to complain. Was never impressed with Lil Gun, will be working up a load with IMR 4227 as that is what I use in my hornets.

It's been a while but I think I used  green dot for mild cast loads in my .41  . I have never been a fan of H110 for the reasons stated above.

I have burned alot of H-110..mainly in hot .45 Colt,41 mag,414 Super Mag,44 mag and .300 Whisper loads.  No issues at all..follow sound load data, use all the precautions..and a heavy crimp!

I started using IMR SR-4756 around 1975 and still use it. Can't tell you why I picked this powder now. I have a IMR-4227 load 15.5 gr and 210 gr lead bullet for cowboy action shooting.
