CCI Ammo 22 mag TNT ?
« on: May 15, 2003, 06:34:10 PM »
Bought some of the CCI TNT and Maxi mags FMJ to try in my 22 mag Henry lever. Has anyone used the CCI Speer TNT on anything yet critter wise? That hollow point looks pretty wicked? Jim
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

Hey Jim.
I have not shot anything with the TNT's yet but I did chrono 5 various 22 mag loads out of my Ruger M77.
Those TNT's were traveling at 2208 ft/sec! All other loads were in the 1800's. I did not shoot the CCI MaxiMag+V though, and they are supposed to be smoking rounds too.
Out of a Ruger single six the TNT's were moving in the 1600's. the others in the 1200's. So If they are accurate in your gun I would stick with them. I am...

The TNT's grouped just over a inch for a 5 shot group at 50 yards. Not as tight as I would have liked out of my Henry 22 mag the CCI FMJ did a half inch with 4 shots in 1 30 cal hole. The TNT's still did good enough that they should be fine for Varmint use. Jim

CCI TNT

I use them in my CZ and love 'em.  If you want a really good example fill up a pop can with water and take aim.  The results are similar on gophers and ground squirrles.  Keep in mind though its a thirty something grain bullet so penetration leaves something to be desired in larger varmits.  I also like PMC's Predator but they don't seem to have the speed the TNT does.

TNT 22 Mag ammo

The TNT's are among the most destructive 22 Mags I've used on smaller critters. Problem is they don't print very well out of either of my rifles (Marlin 882 SSV and a Winchester 9422M). I've obtained better accuracy with the other 30 grn offering from CCI the Maxi Mag +V ammo with nearly as good a "Pop".

For the most part I use the plain Jane Winchester 40 grn JHP which is much more accurate in my rifles but not nearly as destructive as either of the above rounds. If CCI would ever go to honest to gosh jacketed bullets (as opposed to their plated and sized bullets) I think their accuracy would improve substantially.
My primary shooting interests are rifle and handgun shooting. I particularly enjoy 22 rimfire target, plinking, and varmint hunting but shoot a lot of 22 centerfires as well. I am an avid reloader and bullet caster.

I use TNT bullets for hunting and they are Great!! I have only used them on fox squirrels and it was messy! I can't comment on penetration because the squirrels that I shot were 40 to 75yds and know bullet was recoverd. My Marlin 882ssv likes them but it likes the rem ballistic 33gr & the win supreme 34gr best! I really like the TNT and it is my favorite ammo. Hope to pop a Turkey with it in a couple weeks!
