Thoughts on FFFg and Lube Cookies
« on: October 24, 2004, 10:16:05 AM »
I have read that some BPCR shooters use fffg.  Anyone else use it?

Also, does anyone make lube cookies?

I used 3Fg all the time in my 40/65.

It started when a friend sold me 8 pounds of Goex 3Fg real cheap.   I liked it so well, when it was time to order a case I went with Goex 3Fg again.  MV with a 430 gr bullet was 1250 fps.  This is an outstanding load.

I have since switched to Swiss, also in 3Fg.  Swiss is faster than Goex, and 66 gr Swiss 3Fg gives me 1310 fps with that same bullet.

I've heard that some shooters use 3F in their 45/70 with success.

That high MV (1300 fps) is needed for Creedmoor-type matches (800, 900, and 1000 yd).  It is not necessary for shorter ranges (up to maybe 700 yd or so).   It may even be that the lower MV (1150-1250 fps) is better for those shorter ranges.

As far as lube cookies go, I make my own but use them only for paper patch loads in a 45/100.  I use my regular bullet lube, and pour it onto wax paper, about 1/10" thick.  Then I just cut it out with the mouth of the cartridge case when loading.

YEAP.
I burn 50gr of 3Fg Swiss in my .38-.303 under a 271gr bullet.
Works a treat and produces 1300fps from memory.
Cheers

Are Lube Cookies taking the place of the wads?

It can replace the wad, but it is mainly used for paper patched bullets.

Those bullets have no lube.  They may have a bit of lube smeared on the patch to help waterproof it, but that doesn't provide the type of lubrication we're talking about.

So you can make a grease cookie (often out of the same lube you'd use to lubricate grooved bullets) and put it between the powder and bullet, often with either a "normal" wad (card or plastic) and/or a disc of waxed paper to prevent the lube from contaminationg the powder.

Some have used a grease wad with a normally-greased grooved bullet, but as far as I can tell, it's not a real common practice.

Thanks, I appreciate the reply.  It sounded like a really good idea to have the lube cookie spread a little more joy on the inside of the barrel.  I just was not sure.  Thanks again.

The grease cookie is a thin 1/4 inch thick circle cut out of a ribbon of lube. I use SPG lube. It lubes the barrel to cut down of fouling.  I only use them when I reload paper patch bullets in my 45-70.

I never use the grease cookie as a replacement for a wad. I load my powder and compress it with a wad, I then insert a grease cookie topped by another wad, then I insert my desired bullet.  :D

From what I have observed & discussed w/ other Shooters who load them, the grease cookie (GC) can be anywhere from approx. one-quarter to one-sixteenth of an inch thick.

The GC is another variable that must be tweaked w/ as to thickness & composition & use w/ or w/o wads as to what will give the best results.

One time I experimented w/  a BP & PP bullets in my .45-2.4“. The GC that seemed to work best was about one-eight of inch thick. A thin cardboard wad atop the powder kept the GC lube away from the BP.

You can purchase a lube extruder; or, melt the lube, pour into a pan  to the desired depth & let it harden.

Some Shooters cut the GC by pressing the charged cartridge thru the lube, then seating it , any wads, & the bullet. Others cut out the GCs & then store them.
